Students, faculty, and community members gathered on Franklin Street to protest the University's proposal to spend $5.3 million, in addition to $800,000 annually, on a new on-campus building housing Silent Sam. 

Franklin Street filled with demonstrators opposing University's Silent Sam proposal

Traffic was stopped in all directions as demonstrators marched through both lanes of Franklin Street on Monday night. Demonstrators leading the way held a large sign that read, "Put it up. We'll tear it down. Anti-racists run this town." The protest was in response to the proposal by Chancellor Carol Folt and the UNC Board of Trustees to create a $5.3 million "History and Education Center," a freestanding single-use building, to house the Confederate Silent Sam monument on the UNC Odum Village site.

“We’re an old university, and we have hundreds of millions of dollars in deferred maintenance,” said Chancellor Carol Folt at the November BOT meeting. “You hit a point when old buildings get old. We’re trying to deal with that. We can’t rely fully on the state.”
President of the Graduate and Professional School Federation and Student Body President said the University introduced the new fee controversially, undermining student feedback which typically guides the early stages of fee creation.

Was student input considered in this $65 increase in student fees?

An increase in student fees was officially ratified by the Board of Trustees in November, and now faces approval by the Board of Governors.  The new fee of approximately $65 seeks to account for renovations in classrooms and labs. However, student government leaders claim the fee was proposed without a considerable student input. The fee also takes the place of other fees that are being diminished or terminated altogether. UNC head football coach Larry Fedora will not be retained, no replacement yet named

Larry Fedora's seventh year as the UNC head football coach is also his last, the University announced on Sunday. The announcement came just after a loss to N.C. State marked the end of North Carolina football's worst season since 2003.  During his tenure, UNC had a combined record of 45-43 — having some of its best and worst seasons in recent program history under the coach.
