DTH photo illustration. Airbnb provides 20 percent of all visitor stays in Chapel Hill as it leads the short-term rental (STR) market in Orange County. Around 290 Airbnbs remain in Chapel Hill, which could threaten affordable housing by taking away rental properties and raising the price of rent.

Will there be regulations on Airbnbs in the near future?

Short-term rentals are a growing industry throughout the nation, and Orange County is no exception. With almost 300 active Airbnbs and HomeAways in Chapel Hill, Town officials discuss the consequences of the increasing presence of short-term rentals. Legislators discuss the possibility of putting a cap on the number of short-term rentals in an area and requiring permits for these homeowners. They also talk about adding regulations on the number of renters, noise ordinance, partying, parking, insurance requirements and health and safety.

Here's what upward mobility looks like in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area

The Center for Economic Studies released a report last month studying the economic development that people go through from their childhood to their 30s. When it comes to Chapel Hill and Carrboro, the results were a little divided. Black children born to parents in the bottom quintile of household income have a 2.5 percent chance of raising to the top quintile of household income, compared with 10.6 percent for whites, according to the report.
