Demonstrators gather at the site of Silent Sam in response to Carol Folt and the Board of Trustees' proposal to place the monument in a new $5.3 million historic center on Monday, Dec. 3, 2018.

Did police body cam footage factor into dismissing a student's Silent Sam-related charges?

Video footage of Silent Sam demonstrator Mark Porlides shows the Dec. 3 night of his arrest, where officers charged him with larceny, assault of a campus officer and resisting an officer. Since then, the graduate student learned that the charges against him were dismissed.  Porlides said that the incident echoes sentiments expressed by others who are raising concerns over police brutality and unnecessary roughness during public demonstrations. His experience adds to the year's ongoing conversation about policing on campus, and how the relationship between law enforcement and activism has been muddied.
