Aldermen approve free-standing Carrboro library

Hopes of a free-standing library in Carrboro will become a reality in a matter of years after the project was approved by the Carrboro Board of Aldermen on Tuesday night. Aldermen voted 6-1 to rezone property located at 210 Hillsborough Road to create the southwest branch of the Orange County Public Library system. The site will be rezoned from a residential to a business classification.

Towns restoring Bolin Creek

itting the memory of his giving spirit, Chapel Hill and Carrboro celebrated the completion of a stream restoration project Saturday at the park that shares Henry Baldwin’s name. Chapel Hill Town Council member Donna Bell said the project includes a community garden that will serve the towns in a variety of ways just as Baldwin, an active community leader, did.

Carrboro residents voice opinions for proposed library location

Past and present Carrboro residents voiced their opinions on the proposed location of a Orange County Public Library branch at a crowded public hearing Tuesday night.With the bulk of the opposition for the 210 Hillsborough Road site coming from surrounding neighborhood residents, the Carrboro Board of Aldermen requested more information on how a freestanding library could impact local traffic flows before the board makes its decision April 19.

El Centro Hispano adds new programs

Nine months after opening, a nonprofit targeting the Latino population in Carrboro is expanding services to aid its local youth population. The El Centro Hispano center in Carrboro is adding several projects, including the Jóvenes Líderes en Acción program, or Young Leaders in Action, which began in 1996 in El Centro Hispano’s Durham office.

Weaver Street renovations will likely begin March 7

After years of planning, budgeting and saving, Carrboro’s Weaver Street is finally ready for its makeover. Renovations from the east block to the west block of the street are slated to begin the week of March 7 after a bidding process was opened by town officials in January to area developing companies who vied for the chance to take on the project.
