Mediating conflicts between platonic friends can present challenges unlike those faced by romantic partners.
A heart drawn on notebook paper that has been ripped in half is on the ground on March 2, 2023.

Editorial: When falling out of a deep platonic love

"According to Psychology Today, platonic loss, not from death but by friend breakup, is just as painful as a romantic one. It can lead to psychological symptoms of anxiety and “depression with feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness and helplessness.” And the less we talk about it, the more we internalize it."

UNC housekeepers march with posters during the UNC Housekeepers March & Rally on Oct. 28, 2022.

Column: UNC housekeepers deserve better

"If UNC's administration cared, it would advocate on behalf of the workers it represents. It would be working with OSHR to increase the allowable salaries for service workers on campus. It would be working with its staff, not trying to placate them with distracting raises and a bonus program designed to shut down dissent."

'Next to Normal' is up next for Company Carolina and Pauper Players

On Friday, the UNC Pauper Players and Company Carolina will perform their version of “Next to Normal,” a musical about a mother with bipolar disorder and the impact her illness has on her family. Emma Clements, a senior and producer, said the musical was selected last summer and rehearsals have been going on since auditions were held in January. The groups chose "Next to Normal" because of the musical's focus on mental health, she said. “There's a big emphasis in the show that we should take care of ourselves and seek help, but we should also be allowed to embrace our emotions and how we feel and all of those things are also valid,” she said.

Editorial: UNC knows how to go pro

" The Tar Heels have been a leader in almost all of the varsity sports the University offers — and it goes beyond just being a good college team. UNC has consistently put athletes in the pros, and a lot of them. But allowing athletes the opportunity to grow into professionals includes not discounting those who don't have the privilege to display their talent earlier in their career."

Op-ed: North Carolina kids need a support network

"A lot of difficult issues arise during the course of a child’s life. Instead of passing bills that might endanger kids and limit their options for support, our legislature should be providing resources to make sure that children have the help they need. That’s why I sponsored Senate Bill 74, a Students’ Bill of Rights which would assure that students have the freedom to learn."

UNC senior forward Armando Bacot (5) dunks the ball during the men's basketball game against Duke at the Dean E. Smith Center on Saturday, March 4, 2023. UNC fell to Duke 62-57.

Armando Bacot returning for fifth season with UNC basketball

The Richmond native considered testing the NBA Draft waters last season but ultimately came back to a group that entered the year as the top team in the nation. Following a disappointing campaign that saw the Tar Heels miss the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2010, Bacot's return should provide some stability for a program that currently has four players in the transfer portal.
