Fever Needs To Make Over Its Attitude

Student elections generally mean a couple things: annoying mass e-mails, fliers littering campus and unbelievable campaign promises that no one could possibly deliver. This year, there is actually one promise that caught my eye: Carolina Athletic Association presidential candidate Michael Songer's plan to take away Carolina Fever's seats at basketball games. The reason that promise interested me while I scanned the various platforms during class is because I have a long-standing dislike for Carolina Fever.

UNC Sweeps Phoenix, Mountaineers

The North Carolina softball team has had enough with 1-0 games.During the weekend, UNC got back to final scores more to its liking. The Tar Heels, after a season-opening split to South Carolina in which they could muster only one run, blew through a weekend four-game sweep against Elon and Appalachian State at Finley Field.UNC's Michael Parrott took the mound Sunday in the second game against the Mountaineers. The righty mixed speeds on her deliveries and struck out 13 in the Tar Heels' 6-1 victory.

Clef Hangers Don't Fail Crowd

Why are the Clef Hangers just so addictively good?Once again, they have proven that they know just the right ingredients to put on a crowd-pleasing show. Their 2001 Winter Jam drew a packed house for three different showings, and no one should have left disappointed.Part of the Winter Jam's fun is that the Clefs invite other a cappella groups from UNC and beyond to attend.

Annie Peirce Would Serve UNC's Asian Community as SBP

TO THE EDITOR:The Asian American Center for Development endorses Annie Peirce for student body president because of her interest in making the Asian population a more prominent presence on campus and her willingness to generally unify minority groups at UNC.She is the only candidate who has pledged to add a chairman position in her Cabinet exclusively meant to serve as the link between the Asian community and student government and will have a representative to specifically deal with minority affairs.

Fare-Free Transit Ignores Real Busing Issues and Problems

The real question before you on the ballot tomorrow is: Do you want expanded bus service or free bus service? Those who promote free bus service will lead you to think that both are possible. This is very misleading. While we at Think Transit are excited that the UNC community is addressing transit problems and searching for long-term solutions, we feel that the answer to our current and foreseeable transit problems is not fare-free busing.

Stop Denying Honor Court's Shortcomings

Someone once told me that making Mike Trinh a martyr for Honor Court reform was ridiculous. He questioned whether I still believed in Trinh's innocence, if I still thought he should be acquitted.Well, I did, I do and he has.Early last Thursday, the appellate tribunal of the Honor Court dismissed the case, finding that his rights had indeed been violated and he got screwed because of it.This is the best news I've heard all year.

`Frat' Stereotypes Getting Old, Show Others' Elitist Ideas\

TO THE EDITOR:I'm sure I'm not the first to respond to the frat-bashing that goes on periodically in The Daily Tar Heel, but I feel that it is my responsibility to speak my mind in regard to Scott Rooker's Jan. 25 cartoon on the editorial page.First and foremost, the remark about the cocaine is completely out of line and inappropriate. Labeling all fraternity members as cocaine users is a grossly exaggerated stereotype. Admittedly, cocaine does exist in the "frat scene," but it exists in most other "scenes" as well.

Poor 3-Point Shooting Costs Tar Heels in Loss

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Sylvia Hatchell had a dilemma on her hands. Her North Carolina team trailed Virginia 76-73 with 9.8 seconds left Sunday, and she needed a 3-pointer from someone. The Tar Heels were just 1-for-16 behind the arc to that point. So Hatchell did what any coach might have done --she drew up the final play for the player who had made a 3 earlier in the game. But forward LaQuanda Barksdale never got the ball.
