UNC Kicks Off Season's Final Phase in Fine Fashion

North Carolina women's soccer coach Anson Dorrance looks at every season in three phases. The first phase: the regular season. It was not the Tar Heels' best after three losses, all of them in conference play. The second phase: the ACC tournament. The Tar Heels couldn't have been more dominant, yielding one goal in three wins for their 12th straight title. The third phase began Sunday before 2,538 fans at Fetzer Field: the NCAA tournament. And from the looks of things, North Carolina has forgotten the first phase and retained everything from the second. Alyssa Ramsey and K

Get Hyped, Make a Mark On Campus

After many moons of bitching for 16 inches in this very space, I have been inspired. For five years I've trekked into The Daily Tar Heel office in the Student Union. There are signs on the walls, right near the newspaper rack, that direct you to the offices of the Yackety Yak, the Blue & White and the Young Democrats. There is also one for APPLES. I've walked past it a million times, and the only thought I had was that APPLES was the longest acronym I'd ever read. (Note: I am right. It stands for Assisting People in Planning Learning Experiences in Service. Christ.

Film Portrays `Journey' to Find Life's Meaning

What would happen if we took a year off from the college grind and asked the most influential personalities of our nation out for a cup of coffee? If we were lucky, perhaps we would find ourselves in a situation similar to that of Eric Saperston, creator of the cinematic documentary "The Journey." Saperston's footage of his cross-country search for the meaning of life appears tonight at Memorial Hall.

3 Resign, Eyeing SBP Position

Several Cabinet members of Student Body President Brad Matthews' administration submitted their resignations at Sunday night's Cabinet meeting to prepare for their roles in February's student elections. Michael Woods, student body secretary, Annie Pearce, Academic Affairs Committee chairwoman, and Dustyn Baker, executive assistant to the student body president, relinquished their current positions to run for student body president. Assistant Student Body Secretary Fred Hashagen resigned to manage Woods' campaign, and Chairwoman of External Relations Jessica Triche resigned with an intent

UNC Raises Level of Play to Win Classic

Buzz Peterson was worried. The Tulsa coach looked over the box score from No. 6 North Carolina's narrow 66-61 victory Friday against Winthrop and noticed something odd: UNC preseason All-Americans Joseph Forte and Brendan Haywood combined for just 20 points. The duo bounced back Saturday against Tulsa.

BOG OKs Proposal To Increase Tuition

The Board of Governors unanimously approved a two-year budget, which includes a 4 percent inflationary tuition increase, during its Friday meeting in the UNC-system General Administration building. System officials estimate that the increase will generate $16.5 million over two years, which will be allocated to a need-based financial aid program.

Parties, Sports Mark 1st Alumni Weekend

Recent UNC graduates and alumni who haven't seen the campus in years came together this weekend in celebration of the first-ever Alumni Weekend. The General Alumni Association sponsored the weekend event, which included alumni groups from the School of Law and the School of Nursing and marked the 20th annual Black Alumni Reunion. "We are very pleased with the turnout for what is the very first alumni weekend," said Linda Rainey, coordinator of Alumni Clubs.

Flanagan, Tar Heels Run to NCAAs

FURMAN, S.C. - In what looked like a repeat of the ACC Championships, freshman Shalane Flanagan led North Carolina to a second-place finish in cross country at the NCAA Southeast regional on Saturday morning. N.C. State, the 2000 ACC champion, finished first with 72 points. North Carolina tallied 83 points. The Tar Heels' second-place finish guarantees them a trip to the NCAA Championships at Iowa State on Nov. 20. Flanagan crossed the line first in 20 minutes, 51 seconds to finish 20 seconds ahead of Duke sophomore Sheela Agrawal, who placed second.

Student Government Is Accessible - If You Utilize It

It is early morning. The door yawns open, quickly swallowing a pair of shadows before slamming shut. Two figures emerge inside, then disappear into a dark hallway. The first is a short but built figure; he is intense and cautious - definitely the leader of the two. The second is lanky and more awkward. Tall, thin and aloof, he would be lucky to take three steps without walking into a trash can. As they slink down the hall, the second figure turns to the first. "Narf!

Drop a Nasty Habit in the Pit

Smoking is cool. After having read through a few copies of Cigar Aficionado, I'm thoroughly convinced of this. Kevin Costner adorns this month's cover, and if that isn't a firm declaration of the desirability of smoking, I don't know what would be a better one. Therefore, this Thursday the 16th, the date of the Great American Smoke-Out, it doesn't surprise me that the number of Americans who quit will be dwarfed by those who will continue to smoke. And that's a shame.

Sangam Preparing for Show

Chug, chug, chug, choooo-choooo. Are you prepared for the South Asian Express? It's on its way to Chapel Hill full steam ahead. Picture 100 of the finest South Asians on UNC's campus percolating (I know, the notion scares me a bit too) while they lead you around the far reaches of South Asia with songs and dances for an entire evening - and you will understand just a hint of the entertainment that is headed your way. This scene will conclude with the phat fall show Aaj Ka Dhamaka put on by Sangam, UNC's South Asian awareness organization.

An Ode to UNC's Lovely Ladies

I've had my eyes on you for a while. I knew you were a special person from the first time I talked to you. No doubt you had the looks. Subtle attractiveness. Your natural beauty allows you to stay gorgeous at all times. Little makeup. You don't always have to squeeze into skintight outfits to show your assets. Your sunshine radiates even through sweat pants and flip-flops. Pretty face with a well-toned body. You hair feels like silk, and your soft skin is gentle to the touch. Plus you've got those delicate hands that I adore, accentuated by flawless nails. You stay fresh with light perfumes.

Field Hockey Wins Pair, Advances to Semifinals

Kent State field hockey coach Kerry De Vries looked slightly stunned Saturday while trying to explain to the media why North Carolina ran over her team. Sunday, the scene was repeated, except Massachusetts coach Patty Shea was the one in the hot seat. "Carolina has a lot of weapons, and you have to try to minimize them as much as you can," Shea said. "They play well together as a team, they pass the ball well." The Tar Heels rolled through their first- and second-round games of the NCAA tournament, amassing 5-3 and 5-1 victories at Henry Stadium this weekend.

Retracing the Dramatic Moments Of Indecisive Election Night 2000

For a country in which only half of all eligible voters go to the polls, it's amazing how the uncertainty surrounding the results of the presidential election has obsessed the nation. During the past week, the media constantly have been giving us the latest scoop on every possible issue concerning the elections, from what color sweat pants the vice president was wearing on his morning jog to why Dubya has that big-ass band-aid on the side of his face, and we've all been eating it up.

ASG Addresses Rising Student Costs

UNC Association of Student Governments officials met Friday to discuss a systemwide tuition increase passed earlier that day by the Board of Governors. ASG representatives from eight UNC-system schools - including UNC-Chapel Hill - were present at the meeting. The group opposed the 4 percent across-the-board tuition increase passed earlier by the BOG but supported how the money will be used - student financial aid. "We're not happy with the 4 percent increase, but we are happy it goes toward financial aid," ASG Vice President Liz Gardner said. The increase, mandated by the board'

African-American Slave Descendants Deserve Reparations

TO THE EDITOR: Thanks to the DTH editorial board for sparking discussion on the reparations issue. Let me first say that I support the concept of reparations to descendants of African-American slaves. To effectively address the continued consequences of slavery, reparations must be paid for uncompensated labor and enslavement. In the Nov. 8 editorial, two primary reasons for opposing reparations were put forth: The living descendants of slaves are centuries removed from slavery, and the move to provide reparations will divide the country.

Tar Heels Scramble to Pull Out Victory

Ronald Curry walked out to his postgame press conference following Saturday's game against Maryland with a smile on his face. A smile? The North Carolina quarterback had just completed one of the worst statistical games of his career, finishing 7-of-16 for 42 yards with an interception. What did he have to smile about? Plenty. The Tar Heels kept their bowl hopes alive by defeating the Terrapins 13-10 before 40,000 fans at Kenan Stadium.

Palm Beach Results Remain Undecided

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - Palm Beach County election officials announced early Sunday that a hand recount of 4,695 votes yielded enough of a discrepancy from original election results to warrant a hand recount of the more than 462,000 ballots cast countywide. But it was still unclear Sunday - five days after the election - who would be the nation's next president. Palm Beach County officials are scheduled to meet today to plan the countywide recount. But it is unclear when the recount will begin or how long it will take.
