There is honor in being college poor

Many adults look back fondly on their college days as the best four years of their life. The years spent in college are supposed to be the foundation for the rest of our lives.

Brought to you by the letter, 'O'

The new NSSHB is out! No, I’m not talking about the latest New Kids on the Block. It’s the National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior. This is the biggest sex survey conducted and published since 1994’s National Health and Social Life Survey, which was, like, so ‘90s.

Moving forward, looking back

As we celebrate the Campus Y´s 150-year history this weekend, I feel immense pride in the catalyzing role it has played in student ideas and action throughout UNC’s history.

Let's all learn from Coples' mistake

Thursday, UNC students got another reminder to mind what they say online. It started when junior defensive end Quinton Coples posted a Tweet disparaging gays. His apology, posted a few hours later, wasn’t much better: “im not aginst gay people im just heterosexual.” Reaction against Coples’ tweet was swift. Steve Kirschner, the athletic department’s spokesman, said at first he hadn’t seen the tweet but “clearly, it’s inappropriate.”

Foreign theories while abroad

My host dad has a penchant for conspiracy theories. Most are passed on to me at the dinner table and seem to come at just the right moment for me to nearly choke every time. Some are pretty mundane and, to be honest, not very original. He insisted that the moon landing was faked. This little heresy can easily be attributed to an excess of History Channel and is not that shocking.

Time to converse outside of comfort

Sometimes there’s a lull in those passing conversations in which the speakers involved experience a moment of hesitation, painfully highlighted by a scream of silence in the midst of mundane sounds.

The rules of sexual attraction

Have you ever wondered why you’re so attracted to that person in your class that you’ve never even spoken to? Sure, a lot of it might have to do with the fact that they’re smokin’ hot — but is there something else going on?

America: the story of some of us

These are the true stories of three American youths. Each has his or her own tale, but today when we hear their stories they are underscored by one descriptive factor: the immigrant experience.

Sweet southern satisfaction

At every football game, we sing about being “Tar Heel born” and “Tar Heel bred.” Even if our place of origin isn’t the South, we become southerners here.

An Argentine take on family

At first, when the 32-year-old son of my host parents came by the apartment for lunch, I assumed that it was perhaps a special occasion or that he was just stopping by to meet their new American tenant.

Greater decency for dining halls

Beginning today, a group of nine sophomores and one doctoral student will make a weekly visit to Caswell County. The students are part of a new initiative that works to improve rural education by mentoring middle school students.

Universities shouldn't hide behind FERPA

Students don’t have to worry about the University releasing their grades or academic behavior records to the public without their permission. But the same federal law that protects that information has been broadened and abused by universities to withhold public records — records that if released, could help bring clarity and transparency to government processes.

Was one face not like the others?

When DTH editors ran their “Connecting the Dots” graphic last Thursday, their aim was to present a digestible yet comprehensive summary of the NCAA and University investigation into our football team.

Find comfort in the chaotic

They say if you don’t like the weather in North Carolina, just wait five minutes. Of course, the exception is the one time you leave your umbrella at home while you go golfing, it will surely rain all day, without warning.
