DTH's inaugural data desk survey seeks to understand community representation

The Daily Tar Heel's data desk seeks to survey the greater Chapel Hill community to see to what extent these concerns hold true and gain valuable feedback on the shortcomings of our organization regarding diversity and inclusivity.  Most importantly, we want to know what our community thinks about us. Responses will be collected from March 6 to March 24. Afterwards, we will analyze our results and potentially create an article about our findings.

'We all deserve food': Organizations help UNC students overcome food insecurities

Approximately one-in-five UNC students are food insecure. This means that on top of completing homework, studying for exams and spending time in classes, many students have to worry about how they will get their next meal.  Resources and studies on-campus work to eliminate the consequences of food deserts and food insecurity.   “The last thing that someone wants to be concerned with is, 'Am I gonna eat today?' 'Am I gonna have to only eat twice today and be a little bit hungry to make it to Friday before my next paycheck?'” Margaret Matthews, the vice president of Carolina Cupboard, said. “That is just an added stressor to an already stressful life situation at UNC.”

Despite funding, Chapel Hill sees stall in affordable housing preservation, development

The development and preservation of the Town of Chapel Hill's new affordable housing units struggles to keep up with demand, despite increases in funding. This fiscal year, the Town plans to preserve 350 affordable units and develop 30 affordable units. Last fiscal year, the Town funded the preservation of 509 affordable units and the development of 11 affordable units.

'No formal timetable': Building renaming process still underway

In April of 2021, the University Commission on History, Race and a Way Forward submitted its recommendation letter for the renaming of 10 buildings. The next group in the process, the Chancellor’s Committee to Review History and Race Commission Resolution, recently submitted its recommendations to Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz for the building renaming.
