More sexual assaults reported in 2010

The latest campus crime statistics released by the University show the number of reported sexual assault cases on campus nearly tripled in 2010. But officials say the spike doesn’t necessarily translate to an increase in crime.

SMART911 comes to UNC

Smart911 allows users to link personal information to registered cell phones using Rave Wireless technology. If a registered phone places a 911 call from somewhere on or near campus that gets routed through DPS, the information will be automatically displayed to dispatchers.

DPS hears complaints for transportation plan

Students and staff attended a forum with the Department of Public Safety to voice their opinions about the department’s proposed five-year plan, which intends to offset the $6.1 million total annual cost increase to DPS until the 2015-2016 fiscal year by increasing costs to users.

Jaywalking fine goes into effect

Jaywalking, previously punished by verbal warnings, will now be punishable with a hefty $166 fine. In an effort to improve pedestrian safety, the UNC Department of Public Safety has begun the new campaign, similar to an initiative in the 2006-07 school year, which resulted in 19 pedestrian citations.

UNC Department of Public Safety seeks stolen signs

Some students might think event signs or traffic equipment make funny dorm decorations. But campus officials aren’t in on the joke, saying students who take these types of items are committing a crime — even if they don’t realize it. The Department of Public Safety, as well UNC’s Department of Housing and Residential Education, asked on-campus students in an e-mail sent Thursday to return any stolen items

Cyclist hit by bus on Raleigh Road

A cyclist traveling southbound on Raleigh Road sustained minor injuries to his wrist after being hit by a Chapel Hill Transit bus at 7:46 a.m.Randy Young, spokesman for the UNC Department of Safety, could not provide the name of the bus driver, saying only that the driver has been cited for improper passing. He added that the cyclist did not require immediate hospitalization."He has no life-threatening injuries," Young said.

DPS now patrols Franklin Street

Once a dividing line where UNC Department of Public Safety officers’ authority was reduced to calling 911, Franklin Street is now a shared domain between Chapel Hill and campus police. Since July 1, the two departments have collaborated to heighten the police presence in Chapel Hill’s downtown business section where the two departments now share jurisdiction.  Campus and town police have been patrolling together for several weeks to familiarize themselves with the other department’s protocol.
