Low pay harms K-12 teacher recruitment and retention

In 2000 an engineer left an annual salary of $70,000 to teach and nurture students’ passion for science.“Fourteen years later, my pay is still not back up to where I was when I left the (research) industry,” said Raymond Thomas, now a Carrboro High School science teacher.
