Dutch sisters Eva and Jasmina Smolenaars reunite for a semester with UNC field hockey

When Eva Smolenaars left the Netherlands to join the UNC field hockey team five years ago, a sense of homesickness swept over her.  But now, her sister Jasmina has joined the 2021 roster, reuniting the two sisters for the fall semester.   Already, the two have played a combined 402 minutes in their four games.  After college, both sisters hope to return to the Netherlands for further education and play for a pro-league.

UNC field hockey celebrates their third consecutive national championship on Sunday, May 9 in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels triumphed over the Michigan Wolverines 4-3.

After short offseason, UNC field hockey looks to continue its dominance

Only three months after the UNC field hockey team won its third straight national championship, the team is already looking ahead to continue its streak.  Junior back Madison Orobono, senior forward Erin Matson and junior midfielder Paityn Wirth are representing Team USA in the Junior Pan American Championships, meaning they will miss the rest of UNC’s preseason and opening weekend.  To fill in those gaps, the Tar Heels have welcomed nine new players to the roster.
