Second-half comeback dooms UNC

 RALEIGH — No. 23 North Carolina opened up its regular-season finale against N.C. State gunning on all cylinders. The Wolfpack closed the game that way.

NCSU (5-7, 2-6 ACC) took a 28-27 come-from-behind victory on senior day against the Tar Heels on Russell Wilson's 38-yard touchdown strike to Owen Spencer with 14:31 remaining in the game.

Defense snags five interceptions in 31-13 win over Boston College

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. — Deunta Williams had a memorable 21st birthday.There was a party with about 40,000 screaming guests. And there were gifts — three of them, courtesy of a mistake-prone Boston College offense.Williams came away with a career-high three interceptions in North Carolina’s 31-13 victory against the Eagles.

UNC does not allow a third down conversion

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. — By halftime, seagulls were circling Alumni Stadium like vultures. It made sense considering what North Carolina’s defense was doing to Boston College.More than the interceptions, more than the defensive touchdowns, the Tar Heels destroyed a Boston College offense by not allowing a single third-down conversion in 13 chances.

Tar Heels pick Boston College 31-13

North Carolina got three touchdowns in the opening 10 minutes of play — and not a whole lot else.The Tar Heel's opening 21-0 lead was enough to hold up against Boston College on Saturday at Alumni Stadium, and the Tar Heels (8-3, 4-3) walked away with a grimy 31-13 win.

In a turnover-filled game, North Carolina leads Boston College 21-13 at halftime.The two teams have combined to give the ball away six times. T.J. Yates has thrown two interceptions, and Erik Highsmith also lost a fumble.Thanks to the ball-hawking North Carolina defense, it looked like the Tar Heels were going to run away with this one early on.

Tar Heels face Boston College in ACC tilt

With the last home game in Kenan Stadium behind them, the UNC football team hopes to finish off the season in its current form.After struggling in losses against Georgia Tech and Virginia, the Tar Heels have responded with five straight strong efforts and emerged with four victories.


Butch Davis and the Tar Heels started last season with a 7-2 record before dropping three of their last four games.

Bowl in hand, UNC looks to avoid ’08 repeat

After reeling off three straight victories, two of those against top-15 opponents, North Carolina has assured itself of its second straight winning season and bowl eligibility.But given what happened in the final games of last season, coach Butch Davis and the Tar Heels are planning on closing out this season like they closed out Saturday’s 33-24 victory against Miami.

Yates leads Tar Heels with solid showing

Until the first play of North Carolina’s fourth drive during Saturday’s game against Miami, quarterback T.J. Yates wasn’t looking too good. In North Carolina’s first three drives, the junior quarterback was sacked once and amassed a whopping two passing yards on 1-for-3.But then, Yates found sophomore fullback Devon Ramsay in the flat for his second completed pass.

North Carolina secured its biggest upset win since 2004 and its second straight season of postseason eligibility with the following: An interception, a fumble, a potentially illegal forward pass, a 90-yard return, a defensive touchdown and an official’s review.


Tar Heels beats No. 12 Miami 33-24

North Carolina earned bowl eligibility and gave the Butch Davis era a statement win Saturday night, upsetting No. 12 Miami 33-24 at Kenan Stadium. UNC's defense picked off Miami quarterback Jacory Harris four times, and UNC senior cornerback Kendric Burney had three of them. His 170 interception return yards Saturday is an ACC record for return yards — in a season.


UNC leads Miami 20-7 at half

Thanks to two second-quarter interceptions by Kendric Burney, North Carolina went into the locker room with a 20-7 halftime lead against No. 14 Miami.Burney took the latest pick 77 yards the other way for a touchdown with less than a minute to go in the half. His first interception also led to a field goal.


Austin checks in to discuss life at the bottom of the pile

Defensive tackle Marvin Austin is one of the biggest personalities on North Carolina’s football team in addition to being one of the team’s biggest bodies.The junior lineman, who already has been projected to be a force in the NFL by draft experts, chatted with SportSaturday Editor David Reynolds about a variety of topics, including dancing, dreadlocks and music.

Tar Heels zoning in with defense

On a third-and-six for quarterback Thaddeus Lewis and Duke’s offense, UNC’s Marvin Austin backpedaled into coverage, identified where Lewis intended to throw and made a diving leap to swat away his pass attempt.And while the agile play would stand out no matter who was playing defense, Austin’s size and positioning at the snap made it spectacular.
