Orange and Durham Habitat for Humanity receive $9.5 million donations

Both the Orange County and Durham County branches of Habitat for Humanity received $5 million and $4.5 million, respectively, in a donation from author and philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, who was formerly married to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. Both affiliates will use the money to continue the expansion of affordable housing in their respective counties, according to the press release published by Habitat for Humanity.   “With $4.5 million, that’s the largest single contribution we’ve ever received,” Jim Belanger, interim CEO for Habitat for Humanity of Durham said.

Elaine Westbrooks, vice provost for University Libraries and University librarian, will depart from her role at UNC on May 31 and become the Carl A. Kroch University Librarian at Cornell University.

University Librarian Elaine Westbrooks was 'right leader for the right time' at UNC

Elaine Westbrooks is the first Black University librarian since the position was created in 1901 at UNC. “I lean into that because it really changes the way I think about the world,” she said. “And so I really think I’ve been the right leader for the right time.” Westbrooks' last day at UNC will be May 31. During her five years at UNC, spearheaded University Libraries’ work in diversity, equity and inclusion, working to make the library system a better, more accessible space for underrepresented communities.
