Jazz, Classical Merge `In Gabrieli's Garden'

Classical and jazz chamber music meet tonight in a collaborative performance featuring the music of great jazz and classical wind composers. Entitled "Miles Davis in Gabrieli's Garden," the concert consists of separate performances by UNC jazz and wind ensembles. With a title inspired by jazz musician Wynton Marsalis's classical album In Gabriel's Garden, the concert places an emphasis on chamber music, which is an intimate style focusing on small-group performances, said James Ketch, UNC's jazz band director.

Area Democrats Address Students

In a roomful of Democratic supporters, local candidates spoke to students at the Young Democrats "Meet the Candidates" forum Monday night. Three Democratic candidates for local office used the opportunity to come out and speak directly to students on campaign issues and the importance of student involvement. Sen. Ellie Kinnaird, D-Orange, who is up for re-election in November, was the first of the candidates to speak. Kinnaird spoke of her focus on education and the environment and the importance of student involvement in elections.

I have always been amazed by the schizophrenic attitude of some liberals toward media issues. On the one hand, liberals insist that advertisements for cigarettes are responsible for coercing millions of children and adults into tobacco abuse each year. Advocates of this view are so sure that cigarette advertisements "cause" underage smoking that they file lawsuits against tobacco companies. ASU Death Brings No Reforms

UNC-system campus administrators say the recent death of an Appalachian State University student will not prompt changes in their alcohol abuse prevention programs. Philip Thompson, a 21-year-old junior from Charlotte, was found dead Wednesday by his roommate. Police reports state that the victim's roommate said Thompson consumed a large quantity of alcohol the night before he was found dead in his bed - the night of his 21st birthday.

Council Delays Decision On Cameron Restriping

Richard Goldberg spoke to the Chapel Hill Town Council about his greatest fear as a biker - getting "doored." Goldberg, of 202 Fallen Log East in Chapel Hill, was at the meeting Monday night to speak to the council about an item on its consent agenda calling for the restriping of part of West Cameron Avenue, which would eliminate a turn lane for part of the avenue and perhaps leave bikers to fight the traffic in the road. But Goldberg said one of the biggest concerns of bicycle riders is not the moving cars but the stationary ones.

TO THE EDITOR: Student Congress held special elections Tuesday. Apparently this went unnoticed. While voter turnout was respectable in Districts 16 and 17, only a small percentage of students in these districts voted. Turnout in other districts was staggering. Candidates in four districts ran unopposed, winning with just one vote, presumably their own. In five of the districts with vacant seats, not one candidate even bothered to run.

Tar Heels Open Year On Point

The North Carolina men's basketball team enters this season facing uncertainty at point guard. Sophomore Jonathan Holmes and freshmen Adam Boone and Brian Morrison are all competing for the starting spot. With a clear vision for improving student achievement, Superintendent Neil Pedersen has garnered national recognition for Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools. Now it is his turn to be recognized. Pedersen has been named the Regional Superintendent of the Year by the Central Carolina Regional Education Service Alliance, which consists of superintendents from Wake, Durham and 12 surrounding counties. The N.C. Association of School Administrators will review nominees over the next month and name one as N.C.

It was a day of records for the North Carolina men's soccer team. Going into its match with N.C. State, the No. 3 Tar Heels had a chance to break the school record for the best start to a season. Also, junior forward Chris Carrieri had a chance to inch closer to Derek Missimo's UNC record for goals in a season. The Tar Heels accomplished both of those feats Sunday and tacked on a few more en route to defeating the Wolfpack 7-1 at Fetzer Field. Campus Of_cials Say UNC Debate Unlikely

After this year's scheduled presidential debates, including one at a N.C. school, UNC officials say they have not yet considered the possibility of hosting a debate any time in the future. Nancy Davis, associate vice chancellor for University relations, said UNC officials did not apply to host a 2000 debate and, to her knowledge, have not applied in the past. Davis said hosting a debate would require a great deal of money and effort.

Groups Cooperate to Raise Cancer Awareness on Campus

Two student groups are combining efforts for UNC's second annual Cancer Awareness Week, being held from today until Friday. The series of events, which will include speeches and the construction of a remembrance quilt, are sponsored by Carolina Cancer Focus and the Alpha Kappa Delta Phi sorority. Leaders of CCF said the main focus of the week is to educate college students about the threat of cancer.
