Kevin Guskiewicz

Kevin Guskiewicz is the current chancellor of UNC. He is the 12th chancellor of the University and was formally installed on October 11, 2020 after serving in the role of interim chancellor following the resignation of Carol Folt. Prior to this role, he was the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.

This academic year has brought a report detailing Clery Act violations by the University, the reversal of the Silent Sam settlement between the UNC System Board of Governors and the North Carolina Sons of Confederate Veterans Inc., a global pandemic and more. Kevin Guskiewicz began as interim chancellor in February 2019 and took on the position permanently in December 2019.  The Daily Tar Heel sat down with Guskiewicz to talk about the challenges to the University during his time as chancellor so far, as well as his plans for the future.

Guskiewicz workshops Alert Carolina after crimes rattle students

A rape, attempted break-in and report of sexual harassment outside Davis Library have recently instilled fears within UNC students. With suspects at large in all three crimes, interim Chancellor Guskiewicz sat down with an advisory committee where they brainstormed ways to improve Alert Carolina and ultimately, reestablish a sense of safety on campus.

Search for UNC's 12th Chancellor kicks off at the Carolina Inn

After a Board of Governors member interfered with a chancellor search at Western Carolina University by independently contracting a firm to look into a finalist's background, the BOG reformed the guidelines of the process.  Multiple third-party search firms will be involved, as well as deep background checks. UNC will foot the bill for most of it. UNC system president Bill Roper came to a Board of Trustees meeting to brief the board on the revamped selection process, which will get underway with the selection of a diverse search committee.  The search committee will work with a firm contracted to find suitable candidates, but the firms' business model leads to an emphasis on confidentiality, keeping the public out of the process. A University of Florida professor explains how external firms have taken power away from students and community members by conducting interviews by airports to keep chancellor candidates' identities a secret.
