Hate speech from Obama supporters exists as well

TO THE EDITOR: Monday" William Schlieper documented some disparaging remarks made by McCain-Palin supporters directed at Sen. Obama (""Some McCain supporters turning to hate at rallies"" Oct. 13 letter to the editor). If only that were the whole story. Sadly, the other side of this coin is just as ugly.

Cage free eggs are more humane; kudos to UNC

TO THE EDITOR: It is heartening to see that the University is moving away from using eggs from caged hens. Hens confined in battery cages are unable to engage in many important natural behaviors such as dustbathing perching scratching laying eggs in a nest standing on solid ground or even spreading their wings.

Obama knows there must be many energy solutions

TO THE EDITOR: In the second presidential debate" Tom Brokaw asked Sen. (John) McCain one of the most important questions of the election. He asked whether we should fund a ""Manhattan-like project"" or fund ""100""000 garages across America.""

Honor Court should have handled McClendon case

TO THE EDITOR: I am disappointed by the egregious failure in Dr. Adam Grant Student Congress and The Daily Tar Heel to follow the academic rights of Ms. Shaniqua McClendon given to her by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). These rights keep Ms. McClendon's academic information from being released without her explicit consent.

N.C. unfairly hinders third parties' chances in Nov.

TO THE EDITOR: North Carolina seems to be a hotly contested state in the upcoming elections. After eight years of Bush failures the Republican Party has lost some of its grip. Sen. Obama and Sen. McCain are neck-and-neck and your vote may decide the next president of the United States.

Some McCain supporters turning to hate at rallies

TO THE EDITOR: Recent events in the presidential campaign should make the remaining voters for John McCain and Sarah Palin reconsider their choice. The almost complete lack of response by McCain and Palin from their supporters in official campaign events reveals a shocking disregard or perhaps silent encouragement for the rampant racism that they have arguably encouraged.

DTH Student Congress both need a reality check

TO THE EDITOR: An ethics inquiry? A front page news story? Really? Let's assume Shaniqua McClendon who it seems just misrepresented the situation for a ridiculous assignment did in fact embellish her claim before Student Congress.

Kvetching board for October 10

kvetch: v.1 (Yiddish) to complain - My roommate got two kvetches in last week! How can I win our kvetching contest when I can't even get one in! To the two girls sitting next to me in ""Religulous"" at the Varsity. Your constant obnoxious laughter made me want to start believing in God again.

You all succeeded in making your point.

Securexam not perfect blue books still useful

TO THE EDITOR: I have used both blue books and my laptop during exams taken at UNC and both have their proper place as well as their limitations. Using a laptop to take an essay exam in an English literature course is helpful for both professors and students.

Motives benefits for new airport need closer look

TO THE EDITOR: I live in rural Orange County on a horse farm of 32 acres surrounded by woods. I realize the importance of  the Area Health Education Center's work to our state and to UNC.However I do not concur with the line of reasoning for needing a new airport.

Refusal to run column has undermined reputation

TO THE EDITOR: Some Chapel Hill residents may not be aware that Danny Randolph a former columnist for The Daily Tar Heel" wrote a column for the paper entitled ""Beware the Chapel Hill Bubble"" discussing the faltering economy and the bubble The Daily Tar Heel creates by not mentioning such issues. Mr. Randolph's column was denied by the editor" and he resigned.

Publish rejected column with editor's rationale

TO THE EDITOR: I regret the decision of Danny Randolph to resign as opinions columnist of The Daily Tar Heel because of the editorial decision to deny publication of one of his columns. The column which I have read regrets that the campus at large including the coverage in The Daily Tar Heel often tends to overlook or downplay larger and pressing social issues beyond the borders of our self-contained and tranquil campus.

Nichols must explain her new expanded role better

TO THE EDITOR: Eric Johnson told us Wednesday that editor Allison Nichols was defending ""higher journalistic standards"" in her regulation and oversight regarding the opinion content of the DTH. Presumably it was these same journalistic standards which have now allowed her to redefine the structure of the Daily Tar Heel such that the former system in which the editor-in-chief was merely a nonvoting member of the Editorial Board no longer seems to apply.

Common sense that crisis affects campus" students

TO THE EDITOR: I am thrilled that Allison Nichols is thinking of her dim readers when considering columns. When Ms. Nichols turned away Danny Randolph's column she cited a fear that the ""column might confuse readers about The Daily Tar Heel's purpose.""
