GPSF discusses gender-neutral housing, fee increases

The Graduate and Professional Student Federation voted to support a gender-neutral housing initiative Tuesday night and debated the merits of student fee increases. GPSF passed a resolution to offer symbolic support of gender-neutral housing, following a similar vote from Student Congress last week.

Administrators to consider gender-neutral housing proposal

After receiving a vote of symbolic support from Student Congress on Tuesday, a proposal to create a gender-neutral housing option is primed for consideration by University administrators. The proposal, which first gained student support early last spring, will be submitted to Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp on Oct. 7.

UNC will look into Christian a capella group

The University will investigate whether or not the Christian a cappella group Psalm 100 violated UNC’s non-discrimination policy in dismissing senior Will Thomason, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Winston Crisp said. On Sunday, members of Psalm 100 unanimously voted to remove Thomason, who is gay, for his views on homosexuality. He had been a member of the group since his freshman year.

Matney charged with filing false police report

Quinn Matney, the freshman found to have lied about being victim of a hate crime, was charged Friday with filing a false police report. Matney was served with the misdemeanor citation Friday after going to the Department of Public Safety voluntarily, said DPS spokesman Randy Young.

Gay UNC student attacked, burned in hate crime

UNC freshman Quinn Matney was walking on South Campus last week when a nearby man came up, grabbed him by the wrist and burned him with an unknown object. Matney, who faces third- and fourth-degree burns, reported the incident to campus police, who have classified the incident as a hate crime.

"Don't ask, don't tell" survey results show little harm in ending policy

WASHINGTON, D.C. (MCT) — Permitting gay people to serve openly in the U.S. armed forces has a low risk of harming military readiness, though it could cause “limited and isolated disruption” in some units, according to a major study by a Pentagon task force charged with examining the effect of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” law.
