Duke Wins, Grabs Share of Title

The mantra adopted by Duke this season has been "to play like a fist."That is, all five extensions of the hand -- representative of Blue Devils on the floor -- bound tightly together. The Blue Devils went into Sunday's game against North Carolina without one of their fingers -- center Carlos Boozer, who was out with a broken bone in his right foot -- but still packed enough of a punch to knock out the Tar Heels 95-81 before 21,750 at the Smith Center.

History on UNC's Side in Tourney

Around game time, Sylvia Hatchell carries with her a bundle of tongue depressors wrapped in a rubber band. She has a slender wooden stick for every member of the North Carolina women's basketball program. The coach doesn't tote them around because she doubles as the team's physician. She does it because part of her job involves getting her players psychologically prepared for competition. The depressors each have a name written on them, and before a game, the team passes the bundle around.

Assembly May Lose Districting Control

The current system of drawing legislative and congressional districts is under scrutiny from several Republican legislators who want to take the process out of the hands of the N.C. General Assembly.A legislative committee redraws the state and congressional districts every 10 years, after the results of the U.S. Census are announced. But two state legislators proposed bills Tuesday to restructure the system to give responsibility to an independent commission. Rep. Arthur Pope, R-Wake, and Sen.

Class Standing Not Accurate Measure Of School Spririt

TO THE EDITOR:It is obvious to me that Kate Hartig does not know a lot of graduate students, or she would have never dared to write such an insulting piece of "journalism" ("Scalping Duke Tickets Takes Them From Deserving Fans, The Daily Tar Heel, Feb. 26). She takes one example (which she claims she "heard last week") of a few graduate students who scalped their Duke University-UNC basketball tickets for $500 a piece. I am not disagreeing with her general point, which is that real fans deserve the tickets. But there are a few points I would like to make.

School Board Shouldn't Have `No-Go' Power

Giving the Chapel Hill-Carrboro Board of Education the power to approve development might seem like a good idea, especially in light of the fact that Chapel Hill is moving toward smart growth. But it would be problematic at best. The Schools Adequate Public Facilities Ordinance would require developers to submit a Certificate of Adequacy of Public Schools with their development applications. The argument for the ordinance goes something like this: You can't blindly develop without taking schools into consideration. And there's nothing wrong with that.

Dale Earnhardt Death Warranted Coverage Above One Paragraph

TO THE EDITOR: Dale Earnhardt was a man who meant so much to the state of North Carolina and to many other people across the nation. He single-handedly turned NASCAR into what it is today (one of the most popular sports in the U.S.) and brought many new fans to the sport, some who would have never predicted they would be a NASCAR fan one day. He was to NASCAR as Michael Jordan was to the NBA and to Carolina basketball. Yes, I understand that we have the No.
