The mantra adopted by Duke this season has been "to play like a fist."That is, all five extensions of the hand -- representative of Blue Devils on the floor -- bound tightly together.The Blue Devils went into Sunday's game against North Carolina without one of their fingers -- center Carlos Boozer, who was out with a broken bone in his right foot -- but still packed enough of a punch to knock out the Tar Heels 95-81 before 21,750 at the Smith Center.

WILMINGTON -- The North Carolina softball team split a doubleheader with UNC-Wilmington on Thursday, winning the first game convincingly 5-0, but dropping the second 2-1 in eight innings.In the first game, the Tar Heels pounded out 14 hits while pitcher Michael Parrott limited UNC-W to just five. Parrott, who improved to 6-0 with the shutout, struck out six and also hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. In the second game, the Seahawks won the game by scoring two runs in the bottom of the eighth. It was the Tar Heels' first extra-inning contest of the season.

Rowing Races Duke To Open Spring Season

An exiled Burmese official talked to students, faculty and community members Thursday evening about how they can get involved in his country's ongoing struggle against the oppressive military government.Bo Hla-Tint, chairman of the finance committee of the National Coalition Government of the Union of Burma, said his main goal is to seek international support for the exiled democratic government."The NCGUB is seeking global awareness on what is going on in Burma," Hla-Tint said.Hla-Tint traced the history of Burma back to 1948, when it won its independence from Great Britain.

Assembly May Lose Districting Control

The current system of drawing legislative and congressional districts is under scrutiny from several Republican legislators who want to take the process out of the hands of the N.C. A local nuclear power plant has been given the green light to go forward with expansion of waste storage, marking what could be the final step in a two-year battle between Orange County and Carolina Power & Light Co.The Atomic Safety and Licensing Board handed down a ruling Thursday that cleared the way for CP&L to use two additional waste storage pools at its Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant.A Feb. 14 decision by the full five-member panel of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission halted the opening of two nuclear waste storage pools at the plant.
