Scott Kicks Past Grad Speakers In the Head

Kudos to the senior class officers for finally getting it right.Stuart Scott is speaking at graduation, a man who is as cool as the other side of the pillow. The people will come in droves, I predict, filling nearly every seat in Kenan Stadium, ears pricked in anticipation for what words of wisdom might tumble forth from the lips of the best announcer, bar none, on ESPN.Seniors from the days of yesteryear will no doubt curse the academic aptitude that allowed them to graduate before May 2001. And they have good reason to.

University Has Long Strides Ahead in Integrating Races

Almost 50 years ago, a court mandated that the University of North Carolina grant full admissions to graduate school students when equal facilities and programs were not available elsewhere. On June 12, 1951, four African-American students (Harvey Beech, James Lassiter, Floyd McKissick and Kenneth Lee) attended their first day of classes at the University of North Carolina, making UNC the first white university in the South to admit black students.Within the last two weeks, during Black History Month no less, The Daily Tar Heel ran a three-part story on 50 years of integration at UNC.

Duke Game Unites UNC Campus

Wow, some game yesterday, huh? Though I am not the most die-hard Heels fan, I couldn't help catching the fever going around. Today, I'd like to share some of my thoughts on this epic game. What an amazing chance for all of Carolina to come together. There we all were, filling the Smith Center, the bars on Franklin Street and the residence hall rooms fortunately furnished with big-screen televisions.

Terrapins Stop Tar Heels

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland's women's lacrosse star Jen Adams doesn't usually cross her fingers before she takes a shot. That's because most of the balls the two-time national player of the year fires at the net go in. But before Adams made the game-winning shot in the top-ranked Terrapins 8-7 defeat of No. 4 North Carolina on Sunday at Ludwig Field, she held her breath for a moment. With 7:31 remaining in the second half, Maryland attacker Allison Comito fed Adams a pass that flew high above her stick.

Dale Earnhardt's Recent Death Gives NASCAR a Wake-Up Call

The world of motorsports lost its greatest driver in the last mile of its greatest event last Feb. 18 as Dale Earnhardt struck the outside wall in between turns three and four in the Daytona 500. Traveling at a speed of nearly 180 miles per hour, Earnhardt's car sling-shoted from the bottom of the track and collided with a 10-foot thick block of concrete virtually head-on.

The `Anybody-But-Songer Candidate' Shows CAA Woes

What a mess. First this wrestling guy goes on TV, lies, then retracts it. And now Eric's secretary is in a coma. Oh, sorry. Slipped into "Billy Madison" there for a second. But take out comatose receptionists and gay ex-wrestlers, and it's just like the latest Carolina Athletic Association nonsense. Or something.Seriously, the melodrama unfolding within the hallowed halls of Suite B is getting quite ridiculous. And it seems it could continue this way for a while if Reid Chaney doesn't grow a pair and nip this behavior in the bud early on in his administration.

Using Toilet Paper Involves Thickness And Not Surface Area

TO THE EDITOR:Student body president candidates this year displayed humor and resorted to gimmicky platforms to entice the otherwise passive student to take concerns to heart. There is no need to rehash the most important issues, as these are the ones dealt with each year.I have concerns about a Feb. 19 editorial entitled "Two-Ply Platform," The statement, "Because two-ply is twice as thick as its inferior counterpart one-ply, it stands to reason that you only need to use half as much," lacks in all realms of logical reasoning.

Joel Furtek's voice emanated from a pair of two-foot high speakers, sitting on a wooden plank by the right door of the boathouse at University Lake.Using a cell phone for the first 10 races and a radio held up to a microphone for the last two, Furtek provided play-by-play from a motor boat as his North Carolina women's rowing team opened its spring season in the Carolina Dash against Duke on Saturday morning.Although the sound system experienced technical difficulties at times, Furtek's race-calling -- interspersed with color commentary -- made it easier for the onlookers standing on the
