Doherty, Men's Basketball Gain New `Disciples'

To raise spirit in the Smith Center, a group of 15 students have dubbed UNC men's basketball fans Doherty's Disciples, a rival to Duke University's Cameron Crazies.Seniors Will Lloyd, Michael Bucy, Jesse Moore and Will Morris collaborated with several Carolina Athletic Association officials to coin the new nickname, which sprung from a recent Durham Herald-Sun article calling UNC students the Carolina Crazies."I refuse to be labeled the Carolina Crazies," said Lloyd, this year's Mr. UNC.

Chaney Would Make CAA More Effcient as Its President

Reid Chaney should be the next Carolina Athletic Association president. Reid has the drive to be a terrific CAA president, which is clearly seen in his innovative ideas for CAA. If Reid is elected president, he will bring a new face to the office. This will allow new views to be expressed, rather than relying on what has worked in the past. While many plans in place right now are first-rate, there are several alterations that can make the organization much better.

Bible Preaches God's Love, Not Just Wrath, Punishment for Sin\

TO THE EDITOR:In his Jan. 25 letter to the editor, Dave Premawardhana disagreed with my use of the Bible to argue against personal sexual sin and said the Bible teaches Christians to speak out against larger social problems. He feels that the type of argument I made is inconsistent with Jesus' teachings on love contained in the Gospels.I believe Mr.

Cavaliers Drain Baskets, Tar Heels

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Virginia guard Donald Hand dribbled around the 3-point line midway through the second half. The shot clock ticked down to one second. Hand hurled a wild shot toward the goal. It hit the backboard and caromed in. Three points for the Cavaliers. That's the kind of day it was for No. 9 Virginia. The Cavaliers made 11 of their 22 attempts from behind the arc as they blew out No. 2 North Carolina 86-66 at University Hall.Virginia led by 14 at the half and never let the Tar Heels trim the lead to single digits after intermission.

Planned Parenthood Clarifies Point About Morning-After Pill\

TO THE EDITOR:There are a few things from Lee Spears' article ("Morning-After Pill Easier to Obtain" Feb. 20) that I believe need clarification. Spears states that emergency contraceptive pills (ECPs) can be obtained without first consulting a doctor. Though women do not have to schedule a doctor's appointment or go to a doctor's office, a doctor or clinician must approve their prescription before it can be given. This is an integral part of the Dial EC project. Emergency contraception is a safe and effective backup method.

Baseball Rolls Past Pirates

Early Strikes Help UNC Pitchers

Forget about 95 mph heat or curveballs that drop off the table.North Carolina's weekend series against Seton Hall showed that the best pitch in baseball is strike one.The Tar Heel hurlers enjoyed success when they got ahead of the Pirate hitters.Just ask freshman Daniel Moore.Moore (2-0), Saturday's starter and winner, got ahead in the count against 17 of 27 batters while tossing seven shutout innings in UNC's 3-0 win."First-pitch strikes - we talked about that to our staff (Saturday) about how important it is against good hitters," UNC coach Mike Fox said.Friday, s

Lab! Theater Looks for 'The Real Thing'

Apart from writing brilliant dialogue, playwright Tom Stoppard always chooses the greatest titles -- "Arcadia," "Travesties," "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead."With "The Real Thing," it's a perfect tease, at once simple and enigmatic. For those who missed its recent revival last year in New York, Lab!

Spring Sports - Track Looks to Reclaim Dominance in ACC

North Carolina's men and women's track and field teams are heading into the outdoor season in an unfamiliar position. Both are looking to regain the Tar Heels' dominance in the ACC.Since 1988, the women have won 10 of 13 conference championships. But the last two years have culminated in a third- and second-place finish -- respectable, but below UNC's standards."For the women, really, we're pretty doggone strong in all areas," UNC coach Dennis Craddock said. "I think the depth is back.

Spring Sports - Rowing Seniors Come Full Circle in 2001

"Pick it up," yells the coxswain. The race begins as the blades knife through the surface of the water with unparalleled fury. The eight-meter shell's speed increases with the pull of both the starboard and portside. The shell cuts through the water with the machine-like efficiency of the stroke of the team.Yet people outside the rowing community might not know or understand one of the most competitive women's sports at North Carolina.People probably also do not know the outlook for this spring's team of rowers.

Don't Trust Preconceived Notions

He's just an amazing guy. You'd have to meet him personally to understand because I could never express how inspiring the guy is. Let me offer this feeble attempt. He's a student here at Carolina. He's modest, refusing me permission to use his real name. For convenience, let's call him "Johnny Doe." Don't let the alias fool ya though ... he's anything but your typical college dude. Upon first glance, you probably wouldn't think Mr. Doe was that spectacular. He's pretty average looking (although his sense of style is fierce).

Cameron Mitchell's Column Only 'Smut,' Disgrace to the DTH

TO THE EDITOR:Much to my dismay, The Daily Tar Heel has reached an all-time low with the quality of the content it provides On Feb. 2, I was shocked to learn that the DTH is now printing smut. Cameron Mitchell's column, "Sex Isn't Bad -- Try It This Weekend" was disgraceful and inappropriate. Furthermore, the message was simplistic in nature, lacked substance and could have been conveyed without the explicit details. Who's editing the DTH anyway? Larry Flynt?
