Project Showcases Artists, Scientists

A dusty, dingy toy cart sits behind the glass of a showcase in the John and June Allcott Undergraduate Gallery. The title next to the piece is simply "Entropy."A few feet to the left is a tilted red chair in a pile of flour, below a slanted mantle, over which is a framed glass pane with the word, "see" printed over and over on it. The accompanying statement briefly explains general concepts of theoretical high energy physics. The pieces are two of the seven works showcased in the first exhibit of the Synthesis Project, which opened Feb.

The Reprise of the Siamese Dream

This is a difficult thing, mostly because you and I are unlike. Our unlikeness took one of us after the severing of the cord to the crib by the window, the second to a dim corner, bound by the wailing cry of our neighbors. They're grown now. You and I migrated home. It was the first name we knew, as children, and our mother's face the first we loved. She was the first of green stables, ferry between the bonds of the earth and life above it. We were protons, neutrons and the hopelessly divided electrons. Then we found a butterfly on the sidewalk, with broken wings.

Tar Heels Topple Panthers

Home runs might draw crowds, but hustle still wins ball games.Junior Chris Maples proved this fact in North Carolina's 10-6 win against High Point on Wednesday. Trailing 3-2 with runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Ryan Blake chopped a routine grounder to third, seemingly ending the inning and the Tar Heel threat. But Maples dashed to second like he was the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.

Web Site Separates the Hot From the Butt-Ugly

I never considered myself to be much of a cybernerd. I have my own Web page, but that was required for a class. I check my e-mail often and have an AOL account, but so do my grandparents. I've never bought or sold anything on eBay, and the only porn I get is not delivered via a 56K modem, but instead, the old-fashioned way, through the U.S. Postal Service. So what has me tying up my phone lines for hours at a time? No, I already said, it's not porn. It's www.amihotornot.com, a free site where you can view photos of other people and rate them on a "hotness" scale of one to 10.
