Dontrez Styles, the No. 1 junior in North Carolina, commits to play for UNC basketball

The No. 1 junior in North Carolina, Dontrez Styles, has committed to play for UNC, he announced via Instagram Live on Saturday. Styles, a Kinston, North Carolina native, is labeled as a four-star power forward, according to 247Sports, and is the No. 57 recruit in the 2021 class. He picked the Tar Heels over the likes of N.C. State, Georgetown and Maryland, who also offered him.

Three UNC students on what it's like to compete against star athletes before college

High school mixtapes are popular for a reason. As fun as it is to watch two dominant athletes go head to head, it’s just as entertaining — if not more —to watch future stars wreak havoc against, well, lesser competition in their conferences and states. But what about those on the other end of the equation? The Daily Tar Heel spoke with three current UNC students who competed against elite athletes at the preps level to find out.

The Lumbee Tribe's tribal government office, pictured here on Thursday, April 16, 2020, is located in Pembroke, North Carolina. The Lumbee Tribe is a state-recognized tribe in North Carolina numbering approximately 60,000 enrolled members. Most of them live primarily Robeson County.  

Natural gas plant construction causes concerns for Native American landowners

Piedmont Natural Gas aims to connect a 685-acre development site to existing natural gas infrastructure via pipelines. Many of the affected landowners, however, are affiliated with tribes such as the Lumbee Tribe or the Tuscarora Nation and have deep familial and cultural ties to the land.  One landowner said Piedmont has dismissed his concerns about the pipeline's effects on his property, while other activists have raised concerns about its effects on the health of those who live nearby.

Kenan Theatre Company, Company Carolina look ahead to fall 2020 season

Despite the disruption to their scheduled spring season, theater organizations at UNC, like Kenan Theatre Company and Company Carolina, are looking forward to the fall with shows like "Kemps" and "Iphigenia 2.0." Other student-run companies, such as The LAB! Theatre and UNC Pauper Players, are reviewing proposals for next season.
