Thomas Ross, the man who has overseen the 17 UNC-system campuses for the last nine months, was sworn in Thursday. The UNC system’s 17th president says he’s embracing severe budget cuts, resource shortfalls and a troubled economy as a challenge — a challenge he plans to tackle head on.

NC legislators consider reinstating Teaching Fellows funding

State legislators opted to phase out funding for the N.C. Teaching Fellows program in June, but the N.C. House of Representatives’ Republican leader said he is reconsidering that decision. The House passed a funding cut for the program’s administrative costs, but in the final version of the budget, the Senate stripped all funds for future classes of Teaching Fellows. The program currently provides a $6,500 annual scholarship to 500 high school seniors in exchange for a four-year commitment to teach in North Carolina’s public schools.
