‘Absolutely ridiculous’: Students struggle to find on- and off-campus housing

Six hundred UNC students are on the waitlist for fall 2023 on-campus housing. Last year, there were 422. That's an increase of 42.18 percent. The University said in a statement it is common to have a shortage in the next semester's housing availability at this point in the year. Carolina Housing will provide a room for every student who wants to live on campus. “Prices for (off-campus) housing are just absolutely ridiculous,” Jaleah Taylor, a UNC sophomore currently living in Morrison Residence Hall, said. “And that’s why people have to live on campus now — because it’s just so expensive to live off campus.”

'False promises': Residents of Granville Towers face maintenance issues

This week, Granville Towers East has experienced increased maintenance issues within the building. Students say that these issues include broken elevators, HVAC unit and water functioning issues, rusting stairwell handrails and mold. In emails sent to residents, Granville Towers acknowledged recent maintenance issues and provided updates on when they would be addressed in the coming weeks. “The support group and the customer service at Granville Towers is 100 percent lacking," Charlie Fitzgerald, UNC first-year and resident of the complex, said.

Town officials, students concerned about uncertainty of off-campus COVID-19 reporting

Uncertainty regarding the accuracy of off-campus students’ COVID-19 testing and reporting persists. Carrboro Town Council Member Randee Haven-O’Donnell said she is concerned about the accuracy of off-campus student case reporting. Taylor Steele, a senior at UNC who lives in off-campus apartment complex Chapel Ridge, said she believes there are cases at Chapel Ridge, even though she said she hasn’t received any notification from the apartment complex about testing, reporting or positive cases.  Courtney Schnee, the senior vice president and asset manager at Northwood Ravin, said Northwood Ravin has taken several steps to limit the spread of coronavirus at its Chapel Hill properties, including using hospital-grade sanitizing misters and restricting the capacity of amenities such as the pool.

As students look to the fall, questions about off-campus housing remain

With the non-traditional shortened semester for fall 2020 and uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic, some UNC students are left scrambling for off-campus housing and are attempting to negotiate current leases. According to UNC Media Relations, the Office of Off-Campus Student Life said students should work with their housing providers to “determine what works best for them” and contact Student Legal Services if they need assistance negotiating their lease.
