Students struggle to pay rent and negotiate leases due to economic impact of COVID-19

As the pandemic continues, it is becoming harder for students to keep up with housing payments. Some students have tried renegotiating their leases, but not all landlords have been willing to cooperate. Legal experts said landlords have different levels of flexibility, and may be unable to reduce rent or waive fees. However, they still encouraged students to discuss any issues with their landlords.

The Warehouse apartment complex was recently acquired by the Preiss Company, a Raleigh based student housing real estate investor.

Residents of Town House Apartments cannot sign leases for the next school year right now because of potential redevelopment. An email, sent on Oct. 19, stated the apartment complex will assess the redevelopment process in February and update residents. If Town House Apartments redevelops, it will be renamed the Residences at Grove Park, and will increase in tax value by $31.3 million, according to a Chapel Hill 2015 Special Use Permit (SUP) modification application.
