Body found near Southpoint

UPDATE 6:30 P.M. WEDNESDAY — Police said they believe the woman who was found dead on Interstate 40 near the Streets at Southpoint mall this morning had been in a wreck and then walked into traffic.

Police log for Feb. 10, 2010

-Someone kicked in the front door of the apartment of several UNC students and stole more than $11,000 in valuables before 4 p.m. Monday at 902 E. Franklin St., according to Chapel Hill police reports.  Four iPods, $8,700 worth of jewelry, $1,500 in cash, three pocket knives collectively worth $150, one computer software item and one credit card were stolen, reports state.

Someone stole a student’s wrist bag and contents worth more than $200 between 12:10 a.m. and 2:30 a.m. Saturday at Players nightclub, according to Chapel Hill police reports. Among the items stolen were car keys, a driver’s license and a phone, reports state.

Someone stole the grips from and tampered with the seat of a bicycle between 6:10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Saturday at 100 W. Rosemary St., according to Chapel Hill police reports.The person stole bike grips worth $10 and a bike water bottle worth $1, reports state.

A stray dog was reported at 213 Broad St. at 5:46 a.m. Thursday, according to Carrboro police reports.  Police found a black male dog attached to a grill by a chain. The dog had long black hair and was foaming at the mouth.  Police contacted animal control, reports state.

A 26-year-old Chapel Hill man was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement at 8:13 a.m. Tuesday at 1105 Highway 54 Bypass, according to Chapel Hill police reports. Ryan George Evans was arrested at his residence and taken to the Chapel Hill Police Department for processing. He was released on a written promise to appear in court.

Someone damaged a water pipe between 11 p.m. Saturday and 11:57 a.m. Sunday at 326 Lindsay St., according to Chapel Hill police reports. Damage to the water pipe was estimated at $50, reports state.People complained of loud guests in a hotel room at The Franklin Hotel, located at 311 W. Franklin St., at 7:53 a.m. Sunday, according to Chapel Hill police reports.

The assault involved stealing a piece of jewelry worth $10, reports state.

A Chapel Hill man was arrested for a felony second-degree sex offense at 1:45 p.m. Friday at the town's police station, according to Chapel Hill police reports. Geno Markise Eaves, 32, was transported to Orange County Jail and held under a $5,000 secured bond, reports state.

Wake Forest man charged for string of business break-ins

Chapel Hill police have arrested a man who they think is responsible for many recent Chapel Hill business break-ins, according to a news release.Corey Scott Shepherd, a 40-year-old Wake Forest resident, was charged with 19 counts of felony breaking and entering, one count of felony larceny and 20 counts of misdemeanor damage to property, the release states.
