Spingola stops FSU in two complete games

After a home run by Kelli Wheeler in the first Tar Heel at-bat of Sunday’s game — the last of a three-game series which the North Carolina softball team swept — the Tar Heels were left high and dry, stuck with a slim 1-0 lead. But as sophomore Elisha Elliott stepped up to bat, winds of change swept over the team.

Freshman pitcher Spingola fuels Tar Heels past Virginia Tech

With North Carolina’s lead in danger in the second game of Saturday’s twinbill against Virginia Tech, softball coach Donna Papa handed the reins to freshman pitcher Lori Spingola. The move came as no surprise. The right-hander leads the ACC with 127 1/3 innings pitched and 25 appearances, and threw a three-hit, complete-game scoreless gem for a win in the first game of the series. “I think she’s matured a lot throughout this season, and every week she’s gotten better and better,” Papa said.

UNC takes year’s first ACC series

The Tar Heels (18-11, 2-1 ACC) returned to Anderson Stadium after a 10-game road swing and swept the double header on Saturday, 3-0 and 3-2, before dropping the final game on Sunday, 2-1.

North Carolina softball team wins opening scrimmages

In North Carolina softball’s first game against UNC-Greensboro on Friday, the Tar Heels needed a combined perfect game-effort from two freshmen pitchers to ensure the 3-0 victory. But it took the bats of two upperclassmen to seal the 3-1 win in the second game of the doubleheader. In the second game, UNC-G took a one-run lead in the top of the sixth inning, and the Tar Heels hadn’t been able to record a hit since the second inning.

Softball concludes season with loss to No. 3 Washington

In a battle that went into extra innings, North Carolina finished their season with a 2-1 loss to defending national champion Washington in the Regional round of the NCAA Women’s College World Series.After losing to the Huskies 1-0 on Saturday, the Tar Heels defeated Nebraska 1-0 in eight innings on Sunday to avoid elimination.

No. 4 softball to take on No. 5 N.C. State in ACC Tournament

The No. 4 seeded softball team will take on No. 5 seed N.C. State for the second year in a row on Friday in the first round of the ACC Championship in Blacksburg, Va.The Tar Heels faced the Wolfpack three times this season in their annual series, and were only able to defeat them once.In ACC Championship play, UNC has lost four of the past five meetings against the Wolfpack.

UNC softball looking to ?nd spark late in season

Christine Knauer’s voice can be heard from anywhere inside Anderson Stadium. North Carolina’s senior shortstop constantly talks to her teammates. Sometimes she encourages them after a good play and sometimes urges them to stay focused during an at-bat.

Softball takes Sunday win in series against Terps

One bad inning in each was all it took for the North Carolina softball team to lose the first two games of its final ACC home series, but Sunday it was determined to stop the potential sweep.The weekend started poorly for the No. 23 Tar Heels (35-15, 9-9 ACC) as Maryland (27-18, 5-9) took both games Saturday by scores of 5-2 and 2-1.

Softball loses weekend series despite Spaulding’s no-hitter

The North Carolina softball team lost a 4-2 lead against Virginia (21-14, 7-1 ACC) when the Cavaliers scored three runs in the fifth inning to push the score to 5-4 and cost the Tar Heels (27-13, 5-7) Friday’s game. Senior Danielle Spaulding led UNC the next day in its 8-0 win in game one of a doubleheader against UVa. and pitched her fifth no-hitter of the season.

UNC softball falls to Campbell in first game of double header

Amber Johnson held the ball in her blistered hands, rolling it up and down her leg. Her arm seemed twice as heavy as it hung by her side. After pitching in 15 straight games, it’s a wonder that her arm is still attached. And though she put every ounce of energy she had left into her pitches, it wasn’t enough as Campbell took the first game of a double header 6-4 Wednesday night.

String of home runs propels UNC to victory in second game

In the bottom of the sixth inning, North Carolina junior Brittany McKinney broke a 2-2 tie with a monstrous home run that she sent soaring over the foul pole in left field. UNC’s recent power surge continued as it carried the team to a win in the second game of a double header against Campbell.

UNC softball hits record six homers

Haleigh Dickey came to the plate in the fourth inning with an opportunity to break her own school record for home runs in a game.After smashing bombs in each of her previous three at-bats, the North Carolina freshman didn’t get another chance to go deep because she was hit by a pitch, sending her trotting towards first base.

When North Carolina third baseman Haleigh Dickey stepped to the plate in the bottom of the first inning, she wasn’t expecting much.“I was just hoping for a hit,” Dickey said.What the freshman got instead was the first of a hat trick of home runs in a victory against South Carolina.
