Three UNC students on what it's like to compete against star athletes before college

High school mixtapes are popular for a reason. As fun as it is to watch two dominant athletes go head to head, it’s just as entertaining — if not more —to watch future stars wreak havoc against, well, lesser competition in their conferences and states. But what about those on the other end of the equation? The Daily Tar Heel spoke with three current UNC students who competed against elite athletes at the preps level to find out.

Why Chris Miltenberg left powerhouse Stanford to lead the UNC track and field program

“His energy is contagious," said UNC cross country redshirt senior Alex Milligan about director Chris Miltenberg. "He’s going to bring out the best in you, and every day at practice, his energy, his drive, and his own work ethic, rubs off on us. We see how much he puts into it and you want him to respect you and you want to reciprocate the same work ethic he’s putting in.”

The North Carolina men’s basketball team held one of its weekly Zoom meetings on Sunday, putting an emphasis on the group's aspects outside of the game of basketball. “As I was growing up and even up until the last several months," said UNC men's basketball coach Roy Williams, "my biggest heroes were my teachers that I’ve had all the way through high school and college and the mentors that I’ve had. Now my heroes are all the healthcare people and the providers.”

"Since I stepped on campus in August, it’s been an absolute pleasure," Chris Gray said. "The guys on the team are great, and we’re all so close, and I think that’s what makes it so hard right now; going home and not playing right now and just being away from the team because everyone’s just so close like that."

Inside an unusual offseason for Erin Matson and the powerhouse UNC field hockey team

It would be difficult enough, one imagines, to muster up enthusiasm in the midst of a 46-game winning streak that goes back to August of 2018. Then add in a global pandemic that has social isolation at an all-time high and motivation at an all-time low. Players would be forgiven if they spent their days on “Tiger King” instead of stick skills. But Erin Matson doesn’t see it that way.
