Forte Continues to Make Case For Player of the Year Accolades

Joseph Forte's 16-point, 6-of-19 shooting performance in North Carolina's 75-65 loss to Clemson on Sunday can be summed up in one short phrase: Poor Florida State.The sophomore shooting guard blitzed the Seminoles for 36 points -- two off of his career high -- as the No. 2 Tar Heels eased past FSU 95-67 at the Smith Center on Thursday.Floaters from the left wing here, a pull-up jumper from 12 feet there and a handful of penetrating drives through the Seminole defense were just too much for Florida State to handle."I was just trying to make sure we win," Forte said.

Spring Sports - UNC Golfers Anticipate Challenging Season

With a little luck and a few things done differently, the North Carolina women's golf team would have made it to the NCAA championships at the end of the 2000 season.Instead the team placed third in the ACC and 17th in the NCAA Eastern Regionals to cap off a season of steady improvement.Although this season began much the same as the last, UNC coach Sally Austin hopes her team's story will have a different ending this May.Once again, the Tar Heels improved constantly throughout the fall.

The new North Carolina men's lacrosse poster for the 2001 season recently caught women's lacrosse coach Jenny Slingluff Levy's eye.The poster shows something she wants. Slingluff Levy looked in awe at the tradition the poster encapsulated in the team's highlights. The men's team began its winning tradition in 1981.

Men's Swimming In 2nd at ACCs

The North Carolina men's swimming and diving team kept defending champion Virginia within reach in the first day of the ACC Championships in Charlottesville, Va. UNC did not finish first in any event but still managed to wind up second when the day was done.Virginia is currently in first place in the team event with 256.5 points. North Carolina follows with 211, while Florida State is third with 142.5. N.C. State is in fourth place heading into the second day of competition with 123 points, and Maryland is in fifth (110).

North Carolina's men and women's track and field teams are heading into the outdoor season in an unfamiliar position. Tar Heels Topple Panthers

Home runs might draw crowds, but hustle still wins ball games.Junior Chris Maples proved this fact in North Carolina's 10-6 win against High Point on Wednesday. Trailing 3-2 with runners on first and second and two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Ryan Blake chopped a routine grounder to third, seemingly ending the inning and the Tar Heel threat. 2 Football Players Suspended Following Arrests

Two North Carolina football players were arrested in separate incidents Friday and Saturday.Bryant Malloy, a sophomore offensive tackle, was arrested for assault on a female, and junior cornerback Errol Hood was arrested for larceny by an employee.Both have been suspended indefinitely from all football activities.Malloy was arrested for an incident at 159 1/2 E. Franklin Street at Players Club.

Tar Heels Sweep Hoosiers in Straight Sets

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The North Carolina women's tennis team defeated Indiana 7-0 for its second win in as many days. The Tar Heels swept the singles matches in straight sets and took two of three doubles contests to blank the Hoosiers. The No. 22 Tar Heels were led by Marlene Mejia, who defeated Indiana's Kelly Blanch 6-4, 6-4 at first singles. Women's Track, Swimming Take ACC Titles

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The North Carolina women's track team won its ninth consecutive ACC Indoor Championship on Saturday at Virginia Tech, marking UNC's 13th title in 15 years, all under the direction of coach Dennis Craddock. The women finished with 144 points, followed by Clemson with 98 and Georgia Tech with 83.50. UNC's men's team finished second with 93 points behind Clemson's 181 points. Florida State rounded out the top three with 86 points. The women, led by several freshmen, produced outstanding performances during the final day of the championships.

Tennessee Eliminates UNC in Triangle Classic

RALEIGH -- The pieces just came together for the North Carolina softball team during its win against Tennessee on Saturday evening.In the teams' next meeting Sunday afternoon, it seemed things had fallen apart.The Lady Volunteers defeated the Tar Heels 1-0 in the Triangle Classic softball tournament at Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Sunday, eliminating UNC from tournament play.
