Forte Continues to Make Case For Player of the Year Accolades

With a little luck and a few things done differently, the North Carolina women's golf team would have made it to the NCAA championships at the end of the 2000 season.Instead the team placed third in the ACC and 17th in the NCAA Eastern Regionals to cap off a season of steady improvement.Although this season began much the same as the last, UNC coach Sally Austin hopes her team's story will have a different ending this May.Once again, the Tar Heels improved constantly throughout the fall.

The North Carolina men's swimming and diving team kept defending champion Virginia within reach in the first day of the ACC Championships in Charlottesville, Va. UNC did not finish first in any event but still managed to wind up second when the day was done.Virginia is currently in first place in the team event with 256.5 points. North Carolina follows with 211, while Florida State is third with 142.5. N.C. State is in fourth place heading into the second day of competition with 123 points, and Maryland is in fifth (110).

2 Football Players Suspended Following Arrests

Two North Carolina football players were arrested in separate incidents Friday and Saturday.Bryant Malloy, a sophomore offensive tackle, was arrested for assault on a female, and junior cornerback Errol Hood was arrested for larceny by an employee.Both have been suspended indefinitely from all football activities.Malloy was arrested for an incident at 159 1/2 E. Franklin Street at Players Club.

Women's Track, Swimming Take ACC Titles

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The North Carolina women's track team won its ninth consecutive ACC Indoor Championship on Saturday at Virginia Tech, marking UNC's 13th title in 15 years, all under the direction of coach Dennis Craddock. The women finished with 144 points, followed by Clemson with 98 and Georgia Tech with 83.50. UNC's men's team finished second with 93 points behind Clemson's 181 points. Florida State rounded out the top three with 86 points. The women, led by several freshmen, produced outstanding performances during the final day of the championships.

RALEIGH -- The pieces just came together for the North Carolina softball team during its win against Tennessee on Saturday evening.In the teams' next meeting Sunday afternoon, it seemed things had fallen apart.The Lady Volunteers defeated the Tar Heels 1-0 in the Triangle Classic softball tournament at Walnut Creek Softball Complex on Sunday, eliminating UNC from tournament play.
