Night Stops UNC, Gophers

Hitting and runs came at a premium Thursday afternoon, but with senior ace Radara McHugh on the mound, the North Carolina softball team could feel comfortable. Minnesota challenged McHugh in a double-header at Finley Field, and McHugh was up to the challenge. North Carolina baseball coach Mike Fox trotted out his third freshman starter in as many games Wednesday afternoon.And left-hander Daniel Moore answered the call, turning in the best pitching performance of the young season for the Tar Heels.Moore put seven bagels on the scoreboard and picked up his first collegiate victory as UNC shut out William & Mary 8-0 at a damp Boshamer Stadium."It's a big relief, you come out after three other guys have gotten wins and the team's counting on you to give them a quality start," Moore said.

There were no flowers or candy at Carmichael Auditorium on Wednesday night. But there was almost a Valentine's Day massacre.The North Carolina women's basketball team's date with Coastal Carolina ended with the heartbroken Chanticleers going home with a 72-54 loss and without a goodnight kiss.The game looked like CCU wouldn't have much of a chance at the start. Chris Keldorf invested a lot of years in the pursuit of his dream.The path wasn't always a quick or smooth one, but it had its scenic stops along the way, including a renovated Kenan Stadium. The North Carolina baseball team figured out how to alleviate some of the pressure from its freshman-dominated pitching staff Tuesday: bat around in the first inning.The Tar Heels scored six runs in the first, and Scott Manshack pitched six strong innings in his collegiate debut as UNC beat Coastal Carolina 9-4 at Boshamer Stadium."Having a six-run lead really helps out there," Manshack said. Forte, Haywood Named Finalists for Naismith

The Associated PressATLANTA -- North Carolina's Joseph Forte and Brendan Haywood are among the finalists for the 2001 Naismith college basketball player of the year awards. The finalists, announced Monday by the Atlanta Tipoff Club, were selected by a national advisory board of coaches, journalists and administrators. The winners will be announced in Atlanta April 7. The other finalists for the men's award include Charlie Bell and Jason Richardson of Michigan State, Jarron Collins and Casey Jacobson of Stanford, Troy Murphy of Notre Dame and Shane Battier and Jason Williams of Duke.

Tennis Match Delayed Until Early Evening

The North Carolina men's tennis match against Furman has been moved to 6 p.m. today. The match will be held at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center.Both the Tar Heels and the Paladins boast undefeated records. UNC squashed its first two opponents with a 7-0 score against Davidson and a 6-1 decision versus Campbell. The Tar Heels have yet to lose in doubles play. During warmups before North Carolina's game against Maryland, Kris Lang wasn't feeling quite 100 percent. When North Carolina hired John Bunting, he said he wanted to play the best.He's already gotten his wish.North Carolina officially announced Saturday that Bunting's first game as UNC's football coach will be against defending-national champion Oklahoma on Aug. 25.The game, slated for a 7:45 p.m. EST kickoff will be played in Norman, Okla."I think it's a great opportunity for us to start our season off," defensive end Julius Peppers said Saturday.
