Student Body President Hogan Medlin expected to veto election bill

Hogan Medlin has his sights set on a bill currently making its way through Student Congress that would make it more difficult for students to run for student body president. The 22-page bill is an overhaul of student elections law and includes an amendment that would raise the number of signatures required for candidates to appear on the ballot from 1,000 to 1,500.

UNC athletes meet with honor officials

Student-athletes brainstormed with Honor System Outreach officials Wednesday night ways the two groups could work together to promote honor. Ideas included posters in lockers, commercials during games and having honor system representatives talk with teams each semester.

UNC Student Code conflict of interest clause might be altered

The Student Code policy preventing some student government members from also participating in the Honor Court has come under fire. At a meeting Tuesday of the Student Congress, District 6 representative Lee Storrow accused Jagir Patel and Taylor Mercado of violating the code’s conflict of interest clause.

The UNC team investigating allegations of academic misconduct has passed its findings to the student attorney general’s office, but their process won’t be complete for awhile.

Early elections decide new campus representatives

Six of seven vacant seats in Student Congress were filled Tuesday through an online special election. Results for the South Campus District 3 seat are pending due to a Board of Elections investigation into a potential violation of campaign rules, said Andrew Phillips, chairman of the Board of Elections.

About 20 students came together to celebrate Passover seder at a table that stretched the width of the Campus Y Faculty Lounge Tuesday night. The ritual Jewish dinner was organized by a group of students that seeks to promote dialogue about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

Student Congress distributes most of subsequent budget

Student Congress voted to distribute all but $9.71 of its subsequent appropriations budget, the money it has to give out after the annual budget process that occurs in February for the following year, in its full body meeting on Monday night.It is unlikely that Congress will pass additional subsequent appropriations this year, said Jennings Carpenter, the student body treasurer.

Students choose Congress members

Forty-one new members of Student Congress were elected to serve in the 2010-11 legislative branch of student government on Tuesday night.Congress allocates money through an annual budget process and throughout the year during the subsequent appropriations process. Congress allocated about $364,000 during the 2009-10 annual budget.

Communication studies group funded

Correction (1:13 a.m. Jan. 22):Due to a reporting error, and earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that Student Congress representative Lee Storrow voted in favor of appropriating student fee money to the Communication Studies Graduate Student Association and ScreenArts.
