UNC continues multiple construction projects including library café

The UNC Board of Governors recently approved the allocation of University funds for the construction of a café in Davis Library.  The café will be situated on the first floor of the library, and be the first North Carolina location of Pret A Manger. Students can also expect to see the beginning of construction on a café in Davis Library, the new building at the Kenan-Flagler Business School and the partial completion of Roper Hall.

'Exceptionally distinguished scholars': Meet four incoming Hussman professors

Four newcomers — Shelvia Dancy, Michelle LaRoche, Marisa Porto and Peter Sherman — bring a heap of interdisciplinary experience and enhance ongoing commitments to diversity within the Hussman School of Journalism and Media. The Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) demoted the School to provisional accreditation in April 2022, citing the school to be out of compliance with its standards for diversity and inclusiveness, specifically in faculty retention and recruitment.

UNC faces federal complaints for allegedly discriminating against white students

Two complaints against a total of seven identity-based programs associated with UNC were filed with the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights.  The complaints were against programs that encourage participation of certain demographics — primarily women and BIPOC students — alleging the programs were in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.

Earthtones club celebrates student artists of color at UNC

Earthtones, a club comprised of students of color at UNC, aims to foster a space for community building and self-expression through art.  The art collective, which officially started last fall, hosts biweekly community meetings and “paint-and-sips,” during which members can meet to experiment with a new art form together.   “Earthtones has really helped me find people that are like me, that really like expressing themselves through art, connecting with each other in art, talking about it and using it to grow or to help ourselves or whatever it is that we use art to do,” Lokumo Eteni, a musician, said.

UNC senior exhibits in SAMA's first solo show since 2017

A collection of art pieces from UNC senior Dacia Perez-Medina's undergraduate career, ‘Tender Decay’ opened on Nov. 10 and will be on display until Dec. 6. The exhibition is a multimedia production utilizing tactile mediums like fabric, prints and thread is featured in the SAMple Gallery on the second floor of Hanes Art Center.
