Hardy propels UNC men’s tennis win on Senior Day

Senior Stefan Hardy finished his career at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center victoriously on Sunday, helping the North Carolina men’s tennis team to a 5-2 Senior Day win against Florida State. Hardy and doubles partner Joey Burkhardt upset No. 23 Vahid Mirzadeh and Conner Smith, 8-4, to help UNC clinch the doubles point.

Hardy fuels UNC in pair of wins

The North Carolina men’s tennis team (14-6, 9-2 ACC) swept a pair of weekend matches, beating Miami 5-2 on Friday and Florida State 5-2 on Sunday, the Tar Heels’ Senior Day. The win gave UNC the No. 2 seed for the upcoming ACC tournament, in which the Tar Heels will play Friday at noon.

UNC prefers warm weather

North Carolina men’s tennis split its two matches this weekend between the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center’s indoor and outdoor courts. Playing Maryland outside on Friday, No. 15 North Carolina had little difficulty in a 6-1 win. When rain and cold forced them inside on Sunday, they won even more handily, sweeping Boston College 7-0.

Burkhardt’s return from bench beneficial to men’s tennis team

Joey Burkhardt, whose failure to meet team obligations left him on the bench for No. 22 UNC’s first eight dual matches, returned just before the start of ACC play. The Tar Heels struggled to a 4-4 start without Burkhardt but are 3-0 with him in the lineup after a pair of road victories this weekend.

UNC seals ?rst conference win early

The top three North Carolina men’s tennis singles players were the first three off the court. They dominated their matches to seal the first four points and the victory for UNC. The final three Tar Heels dropped the final three matches of the day in a 4-3 win in their ACC opener Friday against N.C. State in Raleigh.

Women’s tennis tops Minnesota at home

The North Carolina women’s tennis team won its fifth straight dual match Thursday, with the victory coming in dominant fashion. No. 3 UNC handled Minnesota 7-0 at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels (12-3, 1-0 ACC) started quickly, sweeping Minnesota (4-10, 0-1 Big Ten) in doubles to earn the first point.

	Stefan Hardy, ranked No. 107 in the nation, grabbed UNC’s only point of the match in his 6-1, 6-2 singles win against No. 103 Ille Van Engelen.

Hardy leads men’s tennis through tough Ohio State match

Stefan Hardy triumphantly raised his arms and yelled after an overhead slam put him two points away from a 4-2 lead in the second set of his singles match against No. 103 Ille Van Engelen. After losing three straight singles matches against ranked opponents, No. 107 Hardy took out his frustration on Van Engelen in a comprehensive 6-1, 6-2 victory.

UNC men’s tennis pounded by Ohio State

The North Carolina men’s tennis team avoided a second consecutive shutout against Ohio State on Tuesday. Barely. After No. 22 Auburn steamrolled No. 24 UNC 7-0 on Saturday, the No. 4 Buckeyes blew out the Tar Heels 6-1.

North Carolina women’s tennis bested by Florida, 5-2

Lauren McHale was the only Tar Heel who did not suffer a defeat in UNC’s 5-2 loss after winning in both doubles and singles play. More impressive, though, were the opponents she beat. Florida freshman Sofie Oyen and sophomore Allie Will were on a 14-match winning streak, the ninth-longest in Florida team history, but they were no match for Shinann Featherston and McHale, falling 8-3.
