UNC women's tennis dominates UNC-G, ECU

Glaring sunlight, unpredictable wind and even frigid temperatures couldn’t stop the North Carolina women’s tennis team on Saturday.In its first outdoor match of the season, No. 2 UNC crushed East Carolina and UNC-Greensboro.

The magic number for senior Sanaz Marand was two.Marand dropped only two games on her way to two singles victories in North Carolina’s two matches Saturday against East Carolina (5-3) and UNC-Greensboro (2-1).Her commanding performance led the No. 2 Tar Heels (12-1) to shutout victories in both.

To a casual observer, the North Carolina men’s tennis team might not seem like anything special coming into this season. In addition to returning a roster stocked with almost the same group that finished 17-11 in 2009 and fell in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, UNC lost its No. 2 player last season, Taylor Fogleman, to graduation.

Senior Katrina Tsang’s motivation for her final season of tennis was admittedly cliché.A pair of nail-biting, edge-of-your-seat, pressure-cooker losses to your biggest rival tends to produce a familiar response. “Duke,” Tsang said when asked what her team’s biggest match of the season would be. “Especially since they were national champions last year.”

UNC junior Katrina Tsang won her singles match in an upset against Clemson but couldn?t manage a repeat against Duke on Saturday.

UNC's ACC streak ends to Duke in semis

A surprising run for the North Carolina women's tennis team came to an end Saturday against Duke. On Friday sixth-seeded North Carolina toppled No. 11 Clemson the third seed to make the semifinals but the Tar Heels met their match against No. 3 Duke's top talent.

Sanaz Marand" pictured last year defeated the No. 1 and No. 7 singles players in the country on consecutive days this weekend in UNC?s matchups against Georgia Tech and Clemson despite a recent slump.

W. Tennis: Back-to-back

Sanaz Marand's junior year of tennis hadn't exactly been going according to plan. After posting a 23-1 record in dual match play for North Carolina last year Marand's numbers dropped. At 15-7 this season she was in danger of missing the NCAA individual tournament after her singles ranking dropped from as No. 8 last season to a current No. 61 ranking.

Baseball - Dustin Ackley hit two homers on top of four runs as No. 5 North Carolina beat No. 3 Georgia Tech 13-10 in the series finale Sunday in Atlanta. The Tar Heels (24-7 9-5 ACC) took two of three on the weekend with pitcher Alex White allowing two runs in eight innings on Friday — a 4-2 UNC victory.

W. Tennis: Women's tennis falls to Blue Devils in singles matches

After four hours and 10 minutes of tennis Sophie Grabinski simply bent over — resting her head and body weight on her racket. The defeated expression came after the UNC women's tennis player watched her backhand shot sail into the net — the final point in her singles loss.  The play clinched a 4-3 victory for No. 9 Duke in a marathon match against No. 18 North Carolina.

Swimming & diving - UNC swimmer Joe Kinderwater earned first-team All-America honors and set a new UNC record in the 1650-yard freestyle this weekend in the NCAA championships. His time of 14:46.06 placed him eighth overall.

Brennan Boyajian fell in both his singles and doubles match" as No. 34 North Carolina fell 5-2 to No. 14 Florida State Sunday. UNC also lost to Miami on Friday.

M. Tennis: Men's tennis faces tough defeat from FSU

North Carolina tennis player Clay Donato hurled his racket into the fence after Florida State player Jean-Yves Aubone ended a controversial singles match in a tiebreaker. The 6-7 7-6 10-8 win ended a four-hour battle that saw No. 34 UNC lose 5-2 Sunday at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center — its second consecutive loss after losing to No. 45 Miami 3-4 on Friday.

Freshman Luke Mojica had already fulfilled his normal duties of playing the fifth court with a straight-set victory against Kenneth Wong of Georgetown early Friday. But an hour before the second match of a doubleheader his duties increased dramatically.

Women's tennis: Tennis team takes 2 wins

The North Carolina women's tennis team crushed a pair of nonconference foes in its first weekend of team action dropping Gardner-Webb and UNC-Greensboro by identical 7-0 scores. The only drama in Saturday's matches was whether either opponent would be able to capture a single set against the Tar Heels — a feat neither managed to accomplish.
