ACC tournaments on the menu for track and field, women's tennis

Track and field Following a laundry list of top performances on Saturday, the North Carolina track and field teams come into this weekend with their sights set on ACC outdoor glory. The Tar Heels will enter competition today in Atlanta hoping to improve on their ACC indoor marks, which saw the UNC men take home fourth place and the women finish tied for a distant second.

Men's tennis team scores fourth consecutive

North Carolina senior David Stone stood center court unnerved. He toed the line, serving to secure the doubles point against Auburn. It was a precarious situation for the soft-spoken senior, yet one that Stone seemingly relished. He wound up and arched a shot into the back left corner, pushing the Tigers' Lukas Marsoun into a backhanded return.

Men's tennis With nine matches remaining on the schedule, the No. 14 men's tennis team has not been defeated all year. Its reward? The players get to compete in eight of nine matches against opponents ranked in the top 50 in the nation. Such is life in the brutal ACC, where 11 powerhouse schools rank in the top 50 nationally.

Tennis team aces Big Ten test

The North Carolina women's tennis team showed its versatility and depth with two impressive 7-0 victories against Minnesota and Indiana on Saturday and Sunday at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. In the two matches, the No. 7 Tar Heels (9-2) dropped only one set and swept both doubles points against their two Big Ten foes.

UNC women's tennis looks to bounce back

Heading down south did not turn out the way the North Carolina women's tennis team would have liked, as they fell to No. 2 Florida 4-3 Sunday afternoon at the Ring Tennis Complex. Coach Brian Kalbas hopes heading in the opposite direction will result in a better outcome. The Tar Heels will leave Tuesday for Madison, Wis., to join 15 other teams at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships.

Men's tennis team captures Sweet 16 bid

North Carolina men's tennis coach Sam Paul was soaked. But it wasn't the three-hour rain delay that had him dripping wet at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. Tennis team conquers two Virginia foes

The No. 5 North Carolina women's tennis team has proven that upsets are hard to come by against the Tar Heels - the team's only losses among its 19 wins have come against No. 1 Stanford, No. 2 Notre Dame and No. 7 Miami. They continued the trend this weekend, fending off two ACC foes from the state to the north as they beat Virginia and Virginia Tech, both by 6-1 scores.

By the time Brad Pomeroy finally strode to the net to congratulate his Virginia opponent at Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on Sunday, he looked tired and frustrated. After winning his first set 6-2, he’d gone on to lose 6-4, 6-3 in the second and third, and his powder-blue T-shirt was soaked with sweat. WINSTON-SALEM -- The 2002 Omni Hotels ITA Southeast Regional ended Monday, and members of the North Carolina women's tennis team took second place in the singles and doubles competitions.Senior Kate Pinchbeck represented the Tar Heels in the final of the singles draw as the No. 1 seed.
