UNC athletes' Black Lives Matter protest signifies new moment in college sports history

A self-organized protest on Aug. 29 saw over 200 college athletes and athletic officials walk down Franklin and Rosemary Street in a march for racial justice, before concluding at Morehead Planetarium. The protest’s message and motivation were part of the wave of activism and public demonstrations sweeping the nation after the deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and countless others due to police brutality. At the same time, UNC’s athletes became part of a different moment — a moment that may prove to be an unprecedented watershed in the history of American college athletics. Today, college athletes have more opportunities to speak about these kinds of issues in the national spotlight.
