Orange County light rail proposal arises

Orange County officials are exploring a new route along U.S. 15-501 for a proposed light rail as the deadline to approve a final route approaches, but planners say it might not be practical.

Mary Cooper's flat-rate taxi program will take time with the town

Students might have to wait longer than planned for Student Body President Mary Cooper’s proposed flat-rate taxi service. Cooper presented her Safe Ride proposal to the Chapel Hill Town Council Monday, and members voted unanimously to refer Cooper’s petition to the town manager.

Amtrack funds could be slashed

Students who take the train home to Charlotte might have to find an alternate mode of transportation if a proposed budget plan is passed by Congress.

	Chapel Hill Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt discussed the issue of alternative transportation with Carl Schuler, of UNC Hospitals, at the Starbucks on Franklin Street Wednesday. Kleinschmidt rode Chapel Hill Transit to talk to bus riders about the transportation system.

Kleinschmidt tests transit system; talks with residents

Mayor Mark Kleinschmidt put the Chapel Hill Transit system to the test Wednesday, riding the HS route to the Varsity Theater. Wearing tennis shoes, jeans and a striped blue polo, Kleinschmidt later met Chapel Hill residents at the Starbucks on East Franklin Street to discuss the town’s transit and mobility issues in a more casual forum.

Construction on Manning Drive detours bus routes

Chapel Hill Transit will implement detours for nine bus routes due to construction on Manning Drive. The detours will only affect trips between 8 p.m. Fridays and 8 p.m. Sundays. A map of the detours is available on the town’s website. The bus stops at Mason Farm at ACC, East Drive at Jackson Circle, UNC Hospitals, Manning Drive at Gravely and UNC Hospitals parking deck will not be served.
