Gov. McCrory plans to improve N.C. transit

Following the N.C. Department of Transportation and Gov. Pat McCrory’s Sept. 17 announcement about a 25-year plan to improve state transportation, leaders are looking to review the projects that could be funded by the plan.

A year ago on Friday, two cyclists were struck and killed on 15-501. In memorial, their friends painted two bicycles and rode out to the site to decorate them. Jason Merrill, from Back Alley Bikes, painted the two bicycles and helped to organize the ride. He explained that "anytime cyclists are struck, it definitely hits close to home."

Cyclists honor hit-and-run victims

To remember the two victims of a hit-and-run accident a year ago on U.S. Highway 15-501, local cyclists held a group ride Friday evening to replace painted white “ghost bikes” to mark the site of the accident.

Due to rising fuel efficiency standards, the North Carolina and federal governments will have to find alternative revenues to fund transportation as the biggest source of revenue — the motor fuels tax — continues to decline.
