Thanks to the NFL, UNC is participating in a CTE study with part of a $14.7 million grant

You may have heard about the tragic death of a former UNC football player who was homeless and nearly unrecognizable in 2015. But his story highlights the way C.T.E. brain injuries follow and affect athletes long after they hang up their jerseys and walk across the stage at graduation. Stories like these and years of research have culminated with the NFL offering UNC, along with other partners, a grant to help develop new findings on catching and preventing C.T.E.

How Lindsey Lemke and the sister survivors overcame 30 years of abuse

“The tears, sadness, pain, guilt, frustrations, depression, anxiety, sleepless nights —  it was all so worth it in that moment,” Lemke said. “Being courageous and coming out with my story was so tough for many different reasons that many others didn’t really have to worry about since I was a current MSU athlete at the time.”  Read about Lindsey Lemke's journey through the corruption of the gymnastics world, from Michigan to Chapel Hill to a courtroom testifying against Larry Nassar.

UNC head football coach Larry Fedora will not be retained, no replacement yet named

Larry Fedora's seventh year as the UNC head football coach is also his last, the University announced on Sunday. The announcement came just after a loss to N.C. State marked the end of North Carolina football's worst season since 2003.  During his tenure, UNC had a combined record of 45-43 — having some of its best and worst seasons in recent program history under the coach. A former Olympic figure skater and UNC Ph.D. student is working to fight eating disorders

Rachael Flatt, an Olympian figure skater, is now a Ph.D. student at the UNC Center of Excellence for Eating Disorders. Flatt and Dr. Cynthia Bulik, also an award-winning figure skater, are studying how technology can aid in preventing eating disorders such as bulimia or binge eating. Flatt is motivated by her personal experience, remembering the pressures of the sport to always be thin and fit.
