UNC freshman Chay Shegog provides a spark off the bench for the Tar Heels. Shegog has 24 blocks on the year and is Hatchell?s go-to player for low post defense.

Clash of the titans

North Carolina takes the court tonight against Virginia a dangerous team that's ranked No. 14 in the country and already knocked off perennial championship contender Tennessee this season. By any measure it's an important game for the No. 2 Tar Heels as they begin a difficult stretch of their conference schedule.

Sylvia Hatchell?s 800th career win was a victory Sunday against N.C. State ? her 500th" 600th and 700th wins also came against the Wolfpack.

Hatchell celebrates 800 wins

It took a little longer than expected but after 45 minutes of nail-biting play Sunday afternoon North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell captured her 800th win as a head coach. And just as in her 500th 600th and 700th victories the win came against rival N.C. State as UNC took down the Wolfpack 75-66.

Sports briefs for November 24

Women's basketballNORMAN Okla. — Jessica Breland poured in a career-best 31 points Sunday helping the No. 3 North Carolina women's basketball team topple the fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners 80-79 in the finals of the Preseason WNIT. Breland who played 30 minutes for the Tar Heels (5-0) off the bench missed only four of her 18 shot attempts.

Jessica Breland and UNC?s other three post players excelled this weekend" scoring a combined 29 points Friday and 27 points Sunday.

Breland post players replace UNC's departed frontcourt

North Carolina women's basketball forward Jessica Breland held her position in the post as she yelled for the ball. As the Tar Heel perimeter players swung the ball around the top of the key Breland continued to shuffle her feet until she arrived just outside the lane. She again demanded a pass until the ball came to her hands.

The Carolina women's basketball team defeated the Premier Players 99-69 on Friday night.

Freshmen on exhibit in second preseason win

North Carolina took a 16-0 start and cruised to an easy exhibition win Friday against the Premier Players. UNC's full-court press generated a bounty of turnovers for the Tar Heels as they controlled the pace of the game. The Tar Heels were never threatened in the 99-69 victory and subbed generously throughout the game.
