The 2008-09 North Carolina State University women?s basketball team players" coaches and other mourners sing the N.C. State alma mater in remembrance of coach Kay Yow in Reynolds Coliseum Wednesday. Hall-of-fame coach Yow died Saturday after a long fight against cancer.

It wasn't a typical memorial. But Kay Yow was not a typical basketball coach. For those in attendance" it felt like there were two services Wednesday: the celebration Yow would have wanted and the time for grief that everyone else needed.

Tar Heels drop second straight

For the first time since 2004 the North Carolina women's basketball team has lost two games in a row. Following an embarrassing showing in the Smith Center against No. 1 Connecticut on Monday the Tar Heels blew a 15-point lead in the second half to fall to unranked Georgia Tech 66-62 in Atlanta.

For the North Carolina women's basketball team more often than not the responsibility of establishing the Tar Heels in the paint rests on the broad shoulders of 6-foot-5-inch freshman Chay Shegog.

North Carolina takes the court tonight against Virginia a dangerous team that's ranked No. 14 in the country and already knocked off perennial championship contender Tennessee this season. By any measure it's an important game for the No. 2 Tar Heels as they begin a difficult stretch of their conference schedule.

Sylvia Hatchell?s 800th career win was a victory Sunday against N.C. State ? her 500th" 600th and 700th wins also came against the Wolfpack.

Hatchell celebrates 800 wins

It took a little longer than expected but after 45 minutes of nail-biting play Sunday afternoon North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell captured her 800th win as a head coach. And just as in her 500th 600th and 700th victories the win came against rival N.C. State as UNC took down the Wolfpack 75-66.

Sports briefs for November 24

Women's basketballNORMAN Okla. — Jessica Breland poured in a career-best 31 points Sunday helping the No. 3 North Carolina women's basketball team topple the fourth-ranked Oklahoma Sooners 80-79 in the finals of the Preseason WNIT. Breland who played 30 minutes for the Tar Heels (5-0) off the bench missed only four of her 18 shot attempts.
