'We all deserve food': Organizations help UNC students overcome food insecurities

Approximately one-in-five UNC students are food insecure. This means that on top of completing homework, studying for exams and spending time in classes, many students have to worry about how they will get their next meal.  Resources and studies on-campus work to eliminate the consequences of food deserts and food insecurity.   “The last thing that someone wants to be concerned with is, 'Am I gonna eat today?' 'Am I gonna have to only eat twice today and be a little bit hungry to make it to Friday before my next paycheck?'” Margaret Matthews, the vice president of Carolina Cupboard, said. “That is just an added stressor to an already stressful life situation at UNC.”

Knowing our neighbors: UNC-Duke consortium bridges Latin American community

The UNC-Duke Consortium in Latin American and Caribbean Studies facilities collaboration between the two campuses across disciplines.  “I think it's important for the citizens and residents in North Carolina to learn about Latin America and its history, culture, politics and economics because increasingly, Latin America is coming here,” Louis Pérez Jr., co-director of the consortium, said.

'Don't take anything for granted': UNC seniors leave their signatures at Bell Tower

On Wednesday, UNC seniors wrapped around the lawn of the Morehead-Patterson Bell Tower to sign their names on the inside wall, which has been a tradition at the University since 2003. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, UNC seniors wrapped around the lawn of the Bell Tower to sign their names on the inside wall, which has been a tradition at the University since 2003. The climb is 128 steps. “It's definitely something that I've looked forward to, and now that I've been able to do it, it's kind of a cap on my career here," senior Cade Darnell said.
