Chapel Hill Comics showcases work of local artists

Just a few blocks west of Columbia Street, adventure and intrigue lurk. Chapel Hill Comics, a place where comic book enthusiasts travel to satisfy their creative cravings, is looking to become a beacon of locally-grown artistry. Andrew Neal, the current owner of the store, said he is working to promote the talents of local comic book artists.

EMS aims for speedier response time

Efforts are being made to lower the average emergency response time for Orange County after it was scrutinized for falling below the state average. Orange County Emergency Services and South Orange Rescue Squad renewed a partnership earlier this month in which Emergency Medical Services will provide the rescue squad, an all-volunteer staff based in Carrboro, with a paramedic in their ambulances. This allows the rescue squad to provide more complicated care, essentially making them an additional EMS unit. Capt.

Chapel Hill to decide if it can save museum

For 14 years, the Chapel Hill Museum has provided visitors a look into the town’s rich and unique history. But last week, the Chapel Hill Museum Executive Board of Trustees announced the museum will be closing if the town does not take ownership. Traci Davenport, museum director since 2005, said the emotional impact of the decision is huge. “With the closing of this museum, there will no longer be a responsive resource to let citizens know the vibrant and varied history of this town,” she said. Don Boulton, co-chairman of the museum’s Board of Trustees, said he was present when the museum opened in 1996 after it was proposed for the town’s 1993 bicentennial. “I believe we have built a museum that the town can be proud of,” he said.

Sales tax referendum on ballot

In the Nov. 2 elections, residents of Orange County will have the chance to vote on a sales tax increase — but some residents are concerned about how the money will be spent.The Orange County Board of Commissioners voted unanimously Tuesday to place a referendum on the election ballot concerning the levy of a one-quarter cent county sales-and-use tax.

Director says new shelter won’t hurt property value

Correction from June 3, 2010: Due to a reporting error, an earlier version of this story incorrectly stated that the Philadelphia Lutheran Settlement House moved to a former nursing home. The location was discussed, but the shelter remained in its original location after repairs. The Lutheran Settlement House serves women and children, not men.

MacGruber movie stars to visit UNC campus

In the time it takes to read this sentence, MacGruber has probably been blown up.The Saturday Night Live sketch that — like its protagonist — has exploded in popularity has been made into a feature-length film, and UNC is the first stop in the promotion tour at college campuses.The sketch is a takeoff of MacGyver, a popular television series in the late 1980s. Richard Dean Anderson played an action hero who could use everyday objects to fashion weapons and tools.
