Though common themes are hard to find in the current exhibit at Hanes Art Center, the artists behind the work are all first year graduate students in the University’s Master of Fine Arts program. The exhibit, “First Year,” is an annual celebration of the first semester work of students in the program. Students say their collaborative efforts helped inspire much of the work.

Tonight, the company will premiere “Fences,” its first work by the celebrated American playwright. The play follows a black family as they struggle to overcome failed dreams and racial prejudices in 1950s Pittsburgh.
