Students Experience Sept. 11 Abroad

The events of Sept. 11 left their mark on our generation. Like the impact that the assassination of John F. Kennedy and the bombing of Pearl Harbor had on generations past, most people will never forget the exact moment they heard the news of the terrorist attacks on America six months ago. Some sat with eyes glued to television screens; others sought shoulders to cry on. Telephones worked overtime, carrying the voices of loved ones around the world. But some UNC students were forced to watch the events unfold from the other side of the globe.

Students Sort Out Complicated Relationships

On any given day when you watch people on campus, UNC couples can be seen sharing giddy smiles and playful nudges. Students play the "game" in classes, meetings or bars, hoping to find the one who makes them stutter. Some find that meeting their sweetie can lead to an unexpected and complicated romance. Suzanne Branon, a sophomore English and education major, found her match in an unlikely partner. Branon said she and her boyfriend are an inseparable duo despite their political beliefs.

Students Spring for European Trip

UNC students have a while before the next break from class. With Martin Luther King Jr. Day's passage last week, the 10 glorious days of Spring Break are considerably far away. But now is the time to make plans. Although for some the plan includes drink specials and a tan line, for others it can come with a passport and a ticket across the Atlantic Ocean. Mark Phillips, an agent at STA Travel, said spending Spring Break in Europe is not as expensive as many students expect.

Robbery Attempt Occurs at El Patio Loco

Chapel Hill police responded to a call about an attempted armed robbery at El Patio Loco restaurant Wednesday night. Reports state that a subject entered the establishment, located at 407 W. Franklin St., at about 6:22 p.m., at which point the subject displayed a handgun and then demanded money. Beth Pozner, an employee at El Patio Loco, said the subject was a black male, roughly 5 feet 7 inches tall and in his mid-20s.

Woman Robbed While Walking in Chapel Hill

An unknown man robbed a Chapel Hill woman at gunpoint Monday night as she walked south on Airport Road. The victim, a 20-year-old Chapel Hill resident, said a young black male with short hair and long sideburns, who was wearing a black shirt and black jeans, stole her purse and several items, according to Chapel Hill Police Spokeswoman Jane Cousins. Police reports indicate that the value of the stolen goods totaled $2,227. The woman was walking south on Airport Road at 7:40 p.m. when the suspect approached her near Mount Bolus Road, according to reports.

Hand Grenade Found At Carrboro Residence

A Carrboro man discovered a hand grenade hanging on a plant hook near an unused doorway as he stepped outside his home Sunday. The resident kept clear of the grenade after he noticed the safety clip that prevents the device from detonating was missing. In a terse police report, Carrboro police called the grenade a "suspicious object." Capt.

Assailant Robs UNC Hospitals Employee

An unidentified assailant robbed a Chapel Hill woman as she walked through an alley on West Rosemary Street on Monday morning. The robbery occurred behind the Key Food Mart, located at 325 W. Rosemary St., at 9:23 a.m., police reports state. The victim, an employee of UNC Hospitals, reportedly had $500 in cash stolen from her as she neared the store. Lt. Jeri Cole of the Chapel Hill Police Department said the woman was on her way to purchase a money order from the Key Food Mart at the time of the incident.

Carrboro Bicyclist Hit, Injuries Minor

A passing vehicle struck a bicyclist who was traveling down East Weaver Street in Carrboro on Wednesday. According to police reports, the cyclist, Anne Datilgren of Carrboro, was traveling on East Weaver Street between North Greensboro Street and Roberson Street when a truck approached in the same travel lane. James Thomas Edwards Sr., 76, was driving the 1970 truck that struck Datilgren. As the truck proceeded down East Weaver Street, the vehicle collided with the bicycle. The rider then fell to the ground, causing minor injuries to her right forearm and ankle, reports state.

Pickup Hits 65-Year-Old At Full Speed

A Carrboro man was left unconscious Monday night after a vehicle traveling at an estimated 45 mph struck him. Henry Lee Mann, 65, of Carrboro was in serious condition Tuesday evening, a UNC Hospitals spokeswoman said. Mann, who lives off West Poplar Avenue, was in the neurosurgery intensive care unit at UNC Hospitals on Tuesday, the spokeswoman also said. Mann was crossing N.C. 54 Bypass at 8:25 a.m. when a red pickup truck hit him. The vehicle was traveling east on N.C. 54 Bypass between Oleander Road and West Poplar Avenue.
