RDU on Stage, a Triangle-based theater review and podcast site, opened conversations regarding racism in the theatre and arts community in early March, before George Floyd's murder in May sparked a nation-wide racial reckoning.
Many students involved in UNC theater have seen problems with diversity and racial inclusion and working to improve these areas.
After the University moved classes online, four student-led theatre groups — the Black Arts Theatre Company, The LAB! Theatre, Company Carolina and Pauper Players — were left uncertain of their next steps. By Company Carolina’s suggestion, the four groups supplemented their individual plans for the fall with a virtual series of stage-readings, one-act plays and student-run performances.
After hearing Gov. Roy Cooper's announcement on Tuesday that museums and other gatherings would be re-opened, the NCMA was ecstatic. “The museum was ready to welcome the people back as quickly as possible," Director of Visitor Experience Janis Treiber, said.
