Orange County BOCC appoints new member to fill Renée Price's vacant seat

During the Orange County Board of County Commissioners business meeting on Tuesday night, the BOCC appointed a new board member to fill the vacant seat left by Renée Price’s departure to the N.C. General Assembly. Other decisions were made including the approval of a new contract for the creation of a strategic plan and revisions to the animal control ordinance.

North Carolina Dam Safety Program receives award for technology innovations

The North Carolina Department of Environmental Quality's Dam Safety Program received the Southeast Regional Award for its recent work pioneering and implementing internal software programs and studies to monitor dam infrastructure across the state. The program has "initiated several innovative projects to provide for the safety of dams, reduction of risks and benefits for the state," according to the Association of State Dam Safety Officials, the awarding body.

Town of Hillsborough gets approval for new strategy to improve water source regulation

The Town of Hillsborough, along with other members of the Upper Neuse River Basin Association, recently received approval for a new approach to water quality management, according to an Oct. 7 press release from the Town. The new approach will improve the regulation of water sources, such as the Eno River, in a more innovative, cost-effective manner.

NCDHHS awarded $13.8 million to expand employment for those with disabilities

$13.8 million was awarded to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services to support those with developmental and intellectual disabilities in finding competitive employment.  The grant will allow 300 individuals to transition from subminimum wage positions to Competitive Integrated Employment positions, where they will earn at least minimum wage.
