Households are considered cost-burdened if they spend more than 30 percent of their income on housing. But in North Carolina, 71 percent of extremely low-income renters — those earning up to 30 percent of the area's median income — spend more than half of their income on housing.
Derek Kelly, vice president of market development for Lumos, said Lumos’ main focus has been on the northern part of the county, where the majority of unserved communities are. The company is now expanding its work — which will continue through 2025 — to the southern part of the county.
