North Carolina basketball is known for 60 years of excellence, and for playing a beautiful, unselfish game. Usually that generosity stops short of handing the opposing team the ball. Even the ever-magnanimous Dean Smith would probably have wagered that would be a bridge too far.

The North Carolina women’s basketball team (8-7, 3-7 ACC) took on the Virginia Tech Hokies (9-7, 4-7 ACC) away on Sunday at 4 p.m. The two teams battled it out for majority of the game, but ultimately the Hokies came away victorious, hitting 14 fourth-quarter free throws — two in the final seconds — to ice the game and claim a 73-69 win.

In what may just be the most volatile men's college basketball season in living memory, one clear trend has emerged: if you want to be good, you need a team of veterans. Take a look at the teams ranked in the AP Top 25 poll — few teams have true first-year players in their rotation, fewer still with a first-year who starts. Gonzaga (with the exception of future top-three pick Jalen Suggs), Baylor, Villanova — the top three teams in the country — are all composed of experienced, veteran players.
