One of my earliest and most distinct memories was standing next to my father at a Moral Monday protest in downtown Raleigh, advocating for a raise in the base salary of teachers throughout our state.

Despite being a grown woman, I’ve accepted having to share a too-small room and sleep sardine style in my twin bed for $900 a month for the foreseeable future. It’s not sustainable, but it’s what I can afford in college.

The pressure is on for first-generation immigrants.

The past five summers of my life have been spent working as a dock assistant at a boat club in Lake Norman. It was the first job that I ever had and soon became the only job that I ever wanted to work as a high school student.

I walk down Franklin Street a lot — like the entire length of it — at least once or twice a day. As a result, I know it pretty well. I also know what it’s like to almost get run over by lunatics driving out of the Chipotle parking lot at 30 miles per hour. So, this is a plea to those who drive on Franklin like it's I-40 — I want to survive walking home.

For years, I never felt disciplined, organized, focused or calm. Instead, I was restless, irritable, reactive and impulsive. I felt the consequences of this early in college – a vicious cycle of chronic stress and anxiety which made me feel like I had no control over my life.

My middle and high school years were riddled with unstable friendships, constant drama, toxicity and an overall inability to keep a solid relationship for more than a few years. I would come home and wonder: Why am I losing friends? Why doesn’t anyone want to talk to me? Why is everyone turning against me? Why are people being cold toward me when I did nothing wrong?

Over 3.5 billion. That’s how many people tuned into Russia's 2018 FIFA World Cup. That’s nearly half the world's population. And I won’t be surprised if those numbers increase during this year's tournament in Qatar. But I won’t be tuning in next week, and neither should you.

Ah, the righteous semi-annual affair that rivals the insanity of a Macy’s Black Friday Sale: course enrollment.

The fear of robotic uprise has occupied the human psyche and popularized mainstream media for decades. It’s not an unrealistic fear, either. This subtle replacement happens every day as we buy into new technology. I remember when my dad’s culinary career was “replaced” by an air fryer.

Ticketmaster is, in fact, the “master” of all things ticket buying.

I am in awe of social media.

The N.C. General Assembly is sitting on a $6 billion budget surplus. Despite that, there’s clearly not enough money to get the lead out of UNC’s water, to address the nearly $1 billion in deferred maintenance UNC has or to expand Medicaid (actually, the federal government would give us nearly $6 billion for this one).

Drake Maye is the best quarterback in college football.

In my wealthy suburban hometown, dads are getting high on the golf course on Sunday afternoons, and the cannabis industry is catching on. High-end dispensaries are popping up all over the country, but do we really need this kind of industry gentrification when there are thousands of marginalized individuals incarcerated for simple possession?

The other day, I was at McDonald’s and my card declined. At McDonald’s. My card declined.
